More forward and back again today. Go, to install the door handle latch, I needed to fit the door mechanicals and striker side latch, but the door hit the striker, so would not latch...Hmm looking at the hinges not much room for adjustments here... So figured I could cut through the door and shorten by 4mm...easy? Removed the door, got the die grinder our and removed some material from the hinge mounting points, and them passed the original colour under the filler, so figured it was time to stop.... through the door back on and now...needed to add 1-2mm shim to hinge. So that was the easy part, now the door clashed with the guard, so the guard needed removing, and that was mounted to the bumper...so it had to come off too. So hours of adjustments and got back to the door fitting, and latching to the striker correctly. So the end result, was a latching door.

So this happened today,
New dizzy arrived today and installed, bit confusing, and I needed to change the cap and rotor to the new one, the old ones don't fit the new dizzy.
It fired right up and idled perfect....or in real life, I re-timed it several times, changing the No1 position on the cap, and started with some effort..and after 30 lumpy secs it settled into a balanced idle.
I guess some clues led to the dizzy not the carb...and with hindsight it seems silly I thought it was the carb. My thoughts were, not really started much in 2years, so the fuel much have gummed up the carb?
but... Rev counter bounced all over the place when it did run, I put it down to an old school Rev counter.
The way it went from perfect to farting about....and then back again.
There was another test too.....after setting up the dizzy, I needed to use the timing light to get it perfect...so got my wife to start it, and timed it to 7.5Deg BTDC (Its a SVDA)...but it started to miss again then stopped ...so after 2mins of wondering and giving it a "stern" look I reached up to fondle the "mower" fuel tank, as I suspected...out of gas....more gas and all was sorted. Ran perfect for the rest of the day..
Neighbour needed some help, so helped him build some trusses for his garage extension. and some more adjustments to the door, and window frame that was my day

Flocking good work. Today was adding flocked rubber seals to the window frames. Played with some wiring today, Started on the oil pressure gauge, not working, and I haven't touch it before. So tracing the wires back...doesn't seem right, do more tracking...still confused this car had run in the past. (but with that Dizzy I don't know how!) So finally, I decided I was right and the car was wrong! so a simple wire switch, saw it all working perfectly. The problem is this whole car is like that....maybe someone rebuilt it all incorrectly and just didn't get it running, so sold it? In my boxes of parts, I only have a few bits of wire left over, What is this bit, and what for? Diode or something? So added earths to all gauges and ran a Dash lighting loom to light all the gauges...and they all work correctly now. My main issue today is I cant find a hazard light switch, or any spare holes for one, and still has 10-15 spare wires behind the dash, but cant find a group of the right colours. Every day, I win something...but everyday it seems I lose ground too. Currently the electric fuel pump, makes the LED lights flicker? Some things I just don't know...

So tonight...I guess I'm getting old...but I got frustrated with the wires. Ive been on my back, and squeezed into tight spaces and wires, just doing nothing...or something I don't know about. So this happened, I don't want this mess behind the dash, so as the Covin is on a shortened VW base, I have some loom length, so it will now run into the bonnet space, with a large 12 place fuse rail, instead of 6 fuses. My plan is to find some large bulk head plugs and simplify with wiring and a open space, lots of relays are planned too. The company I work for makes these, but I thing I want something more compact, can you suggest something?

I'm finding it hard to post something new each day, when really I could not start any new project on the car, and still be busy every evening. But, I didn't like the window wiper motor in the glove box...(was mounted on the metal under the spanner) So I turned it 180 deg, and poked a hole into the bulkhead into the bonnet area and mounted it into the unusable free space. Fits well here, like it was made too. And was worried the passenger glass was not installed, so stored that in the door and frame also, now it goes up and down OK.

Don't think I can help too much but could it be a capacitor fitted to suppress ignition interference on the car? Can't really see the full text on the component so hopefully someone with proper electrical knowledge will make a stab at what it is. Just wanted to say keep up the good work and whatever you do don't think 'I'll have a break from doing this wiring and come back to it .......' I did just that when re-wiring the dash loom on my RX7 and with a few delays came back to it about 12 months later....bejeesus! Took me ages to work out what I'd wired where and what I needed to complete. It's all done now but probably took me 5 times longer than it should have done. Cheers AL

So. needed to go to Guildford to see some friends this weekend and back to the car today, as I'm worried Like Alx said, I might forget what I did and how to sort it.... Wiring is not my favourite, but now my heads is "in that space" I feel OK, and can see it all clearly enough. So today, I started to make up a dash board loom, using some "samples" I had around work. (I looked at lots of Automotive Multipole plugs, but the larger wire plugs don't take good amps, only signal currents) I wont use the "hoods" as they rise to tall, will hold the plug together another way. More wires, And i'm making up a key, as I go along to help out later, some are easy to ID, some just have a random number, so I can ID the dash end and the Under bonnet end. Loads more to do, but in a rush to get it running again, before I forget how to do wiring.

Another evening seemingly wasted. So I was not happy with the fit of the Passenger door window or frame...so removed them to check fitment. Found my fitment problem, glass and frame do not match up... I 85% sure this is 911 glass, as its made by Sekurit in Germany. I hate thinking, but I had to do this in this case, Some time later, the glass fits OK, so will require some "filling" behind the flocked seals, but should be weather tight now. and i'm not finished, now it fits and its all marked, I have to pull it apart again to do a final fit, with all the correct fixings.

Also found the dip problem....after 3hrs...removed the steering wheel...no problem there...more looking I found the offending earth wire not connected up....fix it down and all works again.

I don't see a part built rundown car, I see the fun of driving it, the finished style, the answer to boy hood dreams. More work today, Oil temp gauge works now, and drove it up and down the 50mtr drive, to work the brakes. Now the engine runs so well, its easy to use.

So today was almost a 100% washout for car work. Made up some ramps for the "skates", so I can now just reverse on and unhook the ramps....Easy! Then the simply job of installing the 911(996) seat, so removed the old "Wolfrace" seat and disappointing by the mounts...not to worry I will install Porsche ones! Turns out 996 seats don't fit in a bug chassis, so the rest of the day was spent making up new seat mounts and then helping the neighbour on his garage extension. So from 9am-7pm (including 4hrs working on the garage) all I did on the car was drove the car out with the old seat in it...and 10 hours later drove it back in with the same seat back in it...but the ramps worked perfect, so that was a bonus.

I have Porsche tombstones in my Beetle fitted by the PO with homemade box section mounts. Think it would be a better install frankensteining VW runners.

I cant help thinking how much nicer the car would look with a set of banded steel wheels filling the arches! Deeeep dish. Keep at the work the end is getting close now.

Finding it hard to keep up the posts and momentum currently I am solar powered and need the sun to function at 100% Anyway....Got a BMW series 1 Part leather seats today for £90 and played around to plan an install. So removed the runners to work just on those, Will sell off the Seatbelt pretensioners and recover a bit there, considered the seat Airbags too, but I need the plastic covers more than the £15 Existing seat, well worn and Mouse eaten Then made up some Cad templates for the dashboard....one of the previous owners removed the strength here, and I want to "tie" everything together for more strength. Over the last few days, i have added to the wiring, ordered parts, adjusted the door frames again! Question, Will I need demisters on a 1986 registered 68 bug chassis, kit car....it seems hard to know what reg's were in "June 86" I need to comply with. Tried to find Fog light information, and all I get is the new reg's, but I think I will work a 2pl relay to "reset" with a restart on that...and gets very close to todays reg's.

So todays update, Removed the seat I put in last weekend...and reinstalled another...Thoughts? Got to making the new rail mounts....but my 10 y/o daughter wanted to play marbles...so Marbles always win...soon enough she wont want to play with me, and the Covin will be my only refuge then.
