In an effort to get the starter to start on the key....I had to pull the starter...still could not get the solenoid to engage with direct connection. Pulled down the starter...broke the long bolt...but confirmed the starter is 10yrs new...still square brushes, nice clean commutator too. Removed the solenoid and it would hold in with power...just not pull in.... Now need to source a new long starter bolt and solenoid...and remove the broken bolt. Mine is the Automatic starter...for more heavy duty applications. (Also very expensive to replace)

By the long bolt, you mean the one with the D shaped head? Those are available new from all sorts of places - Limebug is probably closest to you?

By the long bolt, you mean the one with the D shaped head? Those are available new from all sorts of places - Limebug is probably closest to you? not the D bolt...my car does not have those restrictions in space. I expect this to be harder to find....

Mojo restored (at least one small step) Got the broken bolt out...it was too hard to get the tools onto the broken bolt....so tried the "weld a nut on" trick and it worked a treat. Its fair to say this starter was new, even the contacts on the solenoid are in good condition. After I can find a m5 x150 bolt and a new solenoid, I will be in the same place as I was on Thursday.

Motor is so smooth, starts so easy, gearbox selection is like stirring porridge...found a forward gear and some reverse gears too, brakes work...and it moves about under it own power, no electrical systems at all, but getting there.

That shade of yellow really brings up the car's lines.
Glad you got your mojo back, and in a big way it seems. Get on with the electrics, can't wait to see it out on the road!

Pluggin away with sanding and painting....in the last few days, put a few brush strokes of paint into the "low" spots in the paint and sanding flat again. Doing the hard yards now.

I'm sorry to say, I have slowed up this project. Mostly just lazy.
Really its the electrical side slowing me up....its a real bird nest. the engine runs now, after replacing a few wires...but i'm keen on getting someone in to help me with the wiring and I guess to inspire some more work.
I've consider a new loom, but being a kit car, it is not standard, so considering getting an apprentice Auto sparky to help me rewire it.
Otherwise, I've put the side windows in, and sat it it and made car noises...lol.
A quick trip back to NZ recently and I was called over to help someone sort their Mk1 Escort for a Gumboot rally. When I arrive it had one door, no dash, or even brakes and no wheel studs....few hours work and it was ready for the WOF (MOT) and driving. Wish I had that type of support here in the UK.

Can relate with the wiring issues, they can drive me insane and take all the wind out of my sails after a few hours spent endlessly trying to figure something out.
What usually works for me is focusing on something different, small jobs that I can do to bring my mojo back up.
Hope you'll get back on the saddle soon!

nomad dropped up and I thank him for that, it helped inspired me to start on this, and dig the car out, and moved it out of the garage. nomad and I played with electrics. Now Lights, Indicators and wipers are closer to working. Thanks again to nomad , was nice to meet a like minded petrol head.

Today was fun digging though an old-school wiring harness that has been "improved" many times over the years. Lots of comments along the lines of "it shouldn't do that - should it?" and "everything checks out fine - why is it not working". Daft things like simple short wires that measured ok on a meter but failed to carry electricity made things interesting Using the nearby wiring diagram would have meant admitting defeat so that was avoided as long as possible - then we found the diagram didn't match the wiring on the car. Situation normal It made a nice change from trying to fix the same type of problems on my car, meeting new folk off the forum and getting up close to a Covin was a bonus

what can I say.....Someone offered me silly money for it, enough to peak my interest a few weeks ago, so I suggested they view it...then offered too low...I didn't want to sell it anyway. so with the 911(996) suspension is all new, Exhausts, and some Virio Cam plus electrical work. Today all my projects are finished, so the Covin was next on the list. Today was to install door hardware. In my box of Covin parts, 4 different handles....and seems the worst option was fitted. CAD Made, template used, cut to fit. Added a wing mirror, door frame, window winder, internal door handle, some trim.....not the door opens and closes....almost correctly.

That’s fantastic! I don’t know how I missed this thread before. Your car will look like the wide bodied version of mine when you have done. I’m kind of envious of your GRP body. It’s so much easier to do something with that than a metal one. You said at the beginning of the thread that your car will never handle like a 911. I hope not. They handle like cr@p by today’s standards with that big pile of metal out back. Pretty slow too - I drove mine to work today (it’s a stock 3.2 Carrera) and was thinking that my wife’s Audi Q5 is as quick in a straight line and that’s with me rowing on the gears like a mad man! Glad to see you are getting your mojo back on this. Now get on an finish it!
