I like retro rides,i only discovered this place after trying to find a copy of RETRO CARS and went searching the web only to find it had gone.At which point i thought i'll get my retro fix from here. There are some subjects that i find don't interest me so i don't bother with them. But on the whole i like it, i like it alot.Lets not start to slag off the forum, but have more quality input if you think the standards are slipping.
You only get out what you put in.........

Could do with an OT bit I think though. All an OT thread needs is a pic of a chevette or similar and it gets left on the board, no old car pic and its pulled. May as well leave them all up and stick them in an OT part. Nooooooo! I've been on forums (naming no names) that started out as a one-marque forum, then put a 'general chat' section up which rapidly took over as the main destination for new posts. The technical section hardly gets posted on, the general chat has 5 new pages a day of 'what did you have for dinner' stuff. Nice, if you have the time for it but dull if you just want a 30 minute fix of rusty old tat! I'd have to say I wouldn't stick around here if it turned into a general chat forum but the mods are pretty hot on that I think the only compromise we had was a non-real section when GT4 came out on the PS2, for photos of virtual retro rides. Not sure if I totally agree as other forms I go on have an OT section and are all the better for it but I can see what youre saying. The forum works well as it is and it would be a shame to take a risk by putting up an OT part and accidentally wreck it.

Inevitably, people's non-car lives will show in the normal day-to-day goings on on R-R (that's how come we know someone has a duck!), but we don't want a social club*, we want a car forum. Threads about people's jobs, pets or gripes about dustbins and plumbers don't attract new members, in fact they do the opposite. When most of you joined you came to a forum that had pages and pages of retro cars, handy hints, technical know how, intelligent analysis, great pictures and a load of cars that you'd never heard of or thought that you were the only one who remembered. If it was full of pictures of dogs and whinges about Tony Blair would it have drawn you in the same way? * That's not to say that the social side isn't a positive thing, but it's still about the cars. I've made some good friends and met some great people via R-R.

I very strongly agree about not having an O/T section, it would only fill up with inane blather like the other 99.76% of car forums out there. I defo DO NOT want to read about pets, holidays, medical problems, music tastes etc of folk I don't really know very well.
Stick to the cars! My favourite bit is watching folks projects unfold on the readers rides bit, and the eBay thread.

People could still read about projects and see them unfolding but could read and post inane blather if they wanted to.

yeah but you could never be sure that someone had not posted something interesting/car-related in there (this is a car forum after all), like an introducion to their fleet, or an old family photo with a Chrysler 180 in the background, or a youtube clip of an old car TV advert, or whatever. If they did do that, clearly it would be to the detriment of the main 'general' section.
Why have an OT section? I honestly can't see what the actual, positive, benefit would be really. If its not car-related why put it on a car forum?

Serious suggestion: If you want off-topic banter about what colour cat you're wearing for breakfast this morning, what better site than MySpace... ...and there's a Retro-rides group here

I'm love how this place has no OT section, it's one of the main reasons for reading, guarantee'd car conversation.

Of course there's always the argument that the OT thread were it to exist would wither on the vine as people keep talking cars here.
But for me I think this forum has it about right. For every thread with barryish tendencies there are plenty of others about insane 'rods, scrap motors, bikes, sh1te old eastern european tat, Japanese car culture, the list is endless, diverse and entertaining reading.
I'd say it aint broke, so don't fix it!

I was suprised to see a thread where someone was 'not impressed' with the site!
Ive been a member of many and varied car forums and to be honest this forum is the only one that is from day to day entertaining and informative with no (to my knowledge) back biting!
Admittedly there is a lot of content on here that would not interest me but rather than moan about it I just skip to the next post and read on! after all there is so much posting going on theres always something new to read or drool over!
Personally I don't post that much but that doesn't matter cos there isn't any hint of a regular users clique on this forum at all and I don't feel left out or not 'in' with everyone!
I think that if an individual isn't happy with this forum then I reckon they are the type of person that would complain if theyd just found £500 in the gutter cos it was damp!!!!

When is RETRO? RETRO is as much a state of mind as a place in time.New cars like Figaros,PT cruisers and the new 'Mini' all have retro styling and in there own way are all cool.with this in mind coupled with the fact that each of us have our own views on modifying and what to modify,is this not the best place for us to share ideas on such matters..........it's not broke so does it really need fixing? 1) This forum is excellent. 2) it should NOT be changed in any way. NO more sections. 3) I quite like the O/T threads - see current examples for what i like. generally have some car-based discussion. 4) If we do not have any social interaction in the threads, we wil simply become a long list of projects and rides. YAWN. 5) They say how a man does one thing, is how he does another. Also that modifying a car is a representation of yourself, your mindset etc. To see someones taste in cars/mods, is to see their personality and as such we cannot exist without social relationships and perceptions forming. 6) The mix in the General Section is spot on, and you mods are doing a splendid job. Tiny things like ebay cars in the thread, Text Speak, and advertising really new cars/non-related items in the For Sale/Wanted section is all that needs kept in check. 7) Specifically towards HKP: there is no harm in what another forum creator taught me; that is, if you criticise a car, explain why. and thats the way I play it, if I feel strongly enough to post, then I try to convey my reasoning. Same thing when it comes to offering opinions. I've noticed it happening to you too, but don't fear, as long as you explain your mindset, it is up to you whether you like/dislike/agree/disgree with anything that is posted or not. 8) I like grubby threads, even about relatively modern cars. I'm in that little bandwagon of mildly skilled but knowing nothing technical, and to me, curing an ignition fault by way of rotor replacing is an achievement! although, i daresay I wouldn't feel compelled to post that, but if I hadn't been "nurtured" on a couple of forums, I would never have reached even this stage. So if someone posts up something the experts/veterans see as inconsequential, remember this is like when your kids took their first step. And just like the kids, you should encourage them to keep at it even when they fall, and also encourage them to look into zetec conversions Peace Out.

HotWires theory is entirely right.
Stick most things in one forum, anything people like will float and anything they don't sink. It only falls down when people reply to posts for replyings sake.
So many forums cater people with no imagination who just want idle chat, MSN Messenger is there for stuff like that.

this hasn;t died yet then? IN the face of negativity we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule - we rule. TBH the idea of a forum where people just post up pictures of top quality cars and signal their approval and make no adverse comment or post tat or other junk ten I think that would be a bit, well, stale. And possibly elitist? I can see you don't want a slide into total tat, but in order to be inclusive you have to regard the home made tat later model stuff as fair game. Or it eventually just becaomes "look what rich people are getting to p builders to do with their cars". but on the other hand it doesn;t want to be just another Tesco car park but with a few cars rattle can black... I still think we rule.

I think criticism of cars posted up is fine if it's backed up with something, i.e.: "I don't like it because A B C. If it were mine I'd do X Y Z." or "I don't like it, but here's a pic of one I do like" Oh, and it's a big fat NOOoooooo to an OT section from me!

Its good that threads like this crop up from time to time, they tend to result in relatively new members speaking up about how much they like the site, and that way we know its bringing new members in and they are sticking around.
I don't think an O/T section would be a good idea either. Sometimes things go O/T anyway, and thats nice, as surprisingskoda said, there has to be some social interaction and if some guy posts a pic of his Cortina with his pet Giant African Snail in the background, then theres nothing wrong with some other guy going "Say fella thats a swell looking` giant african snail ya got there, how about that, folks?" But if we had an actual O/T section then, come on, think about it, IMAGINE the sorts of things that would be getting posted up, it doesnt bear thinking about.
F*ck all wrong with the site, but its nice to take stock every now and then, if I were Hotwire I`d be quite happy with this thread and how its unfolded.
As for stuff drying up, it cant do, ever, new cars are being inducted into the retro category everyday, when`s the last time you saw a Fiat Tempra? None on here yet, but it cant be long, old, boxy, no-one wants them anymore, theres probably some crazy italian guys doing all sorts of crazy things with them already if you look.
