I'm running a 1.8dx in a mk1 golf gti, on bike carbs, fast road cam, vernier pulley, uprated belt and 4-2-1 manifold. I had it rolling roaded last year and it made 134bhp/131ftlbs, I'm looking at getting the most out of it and I'm considering a polished head? Anyone running one atm? What's the before and after differences? Worth it or not?

Polishing wont make any difference.A properly ported head will make decent power improvement, along with skimming it to raise the compression.

A lot of it depends on who does the work and how well they know the heads
Just because some one can do a good job on a pinto doesn't mean they will do a good job of your vw one
Port matching is a good way to start

Is the 1.8dx a GTi engine at all? If not, the easiest step to take is to get a GTi head as they have bigger valves I seem to recall
