Hi all. Got a little DooDaa that I can't seem to find an answer to, been on the phone to the DVLA too and they went on as if I was speaking in reversed Hungarian with an Irish twang...
It's quite simple.
Tax ran out on my '71 Herald August 2013. I have taken zero action. So my car is "UnTaxed" not "Sorn"
Just wondering if I'm building up an epic fine or if I'm in line for any trouble?
All I can find on the net is that the DVLA will clamp you and impound your car IF they manage to find it, which means you'll have to pay to get it released... But it's garaged under someone else's name so no chance of them finding it...

is it in your name and was when the tax ran out?
if so, I'm surprised they haven't been chasing you already unless its cat c where they don't send reminders and you cant sorn or tax online, you have to fill in a form to sorn it through the post.
will they try and charge you? I would have thought so, and as I mentioned I'm surprised you havent heard from them.

If it is garaged under someone elses name then it is them they will be chasing, not you.
Just apply for the sorn and hope for the best.

What does 'garaged under someone else's name' mean? Are your details on the V5C?
Regardless of anything, if its not SORN'd now, SORN it.
In all likelihood, the DVLA will send you an £80 penalty charge for not re-taxing or declaring SORN, which in unenforceable and you may ignore.

I had forgotten to sorn one of the cars before this indefinite sorn change happened. In fact I got all the V5c out and checked each one.
Anyway, one of the escorts at the time wasn't sorned. Used the document reference number and the reg and sorned it - didn't hear anything after. It's gotta be done in any case now...

I'm not worried about paying the £80 fine, that's completely down to me leaving things to the last minute as usual, my main concern is weather I'm accumulating further charges! I haven't heard anything apart from the initial reminder... The car was and is fully registered to me.
When I say garaged under someone else's name, I mean the garage that it's stored in has no link to me whatsoever

Colin It has my car, 2 complete kingsize beds (of which the mattresses are on the herald's roof) Around £1200's worth of jumbo metal partition stud work, a 1.6 Capri engine, various car related things. 4 sets of alloy wheels, lots of '88 Volvo 240 parts, clothes, a drivers seat from my old S14 that's going in the herald... That's almost it! Lol

I'm not worried about paying the £80 fine, that's completely down to me leaving things to the last minute as usual, Do not pay any 'fine' the DVLA have no basis to fine you and can not take any action to get money from you, you might receive some of those 'we are acting on behalf of DVLA to collect monies owed' type letters but just file them in the bin. As for the car being clamped and towed, they first need to find the car and will only look on the property where the car is registered and if they did find the car they have to ask the police to attend to hold their hands whilst they put the clamp on and do the paperwork and believe me no police officer wants to waste their time doing this as no offence has been committed and there is a shed load of paperwork to fill out should the car owner kick off. they will only tow the car if it is easily accessible as the recovery operator can not move property to gain access so towing just doesn't happen unless the car is on a public road or car park.

That was a pleasurable read Thanks very much for your response, I just wish I could Sorn the damn thing now!

Form v890 is what you need & can be done in the post office if you have the log book in your name. I recently realised that I hadn't received the log book for my car bought back in September, it needs a SORN and I've yet to get around to doing it.
It's a bit different if you have no log book as you need to pay £25 and fill out the log book request form and submit it with a V890. If you have the log book in your name then you can try the automated service (as long as it has been in your name for at least a year) on 0300 123 4321 and enter the 11 digit doc ref on the front of your log book.
Always best to get it out of the way and then fight your corner if needed.
(turns out my logbook never arrived as the previous owner sent the yellow section off)

I should have known better, dvla say go to the post office and the post office say we don't do those forms anymore you need to do it online or by phone.
So you have to download the form from dvla's website and either queue up or post it.

marinacoupe only works if you've not recently taken ownership, this is why I've been given the runaround by DVLA/Post office.
