My GF was using my car yesterday when it died at her friends house after 2 weeks of trouble free driving. Nothing was working in the car so it seemed the battery had died, we started it using jump leads and drove it home. Last night I left the battery on charge, so for a good 12 hours, come out to the car today and its dead again.
What is the likely problem here, duff battery? The battery charger was used two weeks ago and has been working fine.
Now I need to borrow some jump leads to get it started again!
Any ideas?
Cheers

If a battery still doesn't work once it's been charged, it's most likely to be duff.

Sounds like a duff battery to me... If you've got or can get hold of a digital volt meter (think they're quite cheap for a basic one from Maplin or Halfords - that's all you need), you can do some simple checks... As an example, take my recently dead battery in the BX, it measures just over 12v on charge, leave it overnight and it drops to 10v, which means that a cell has died... Also Halfords do a free battery check, the guy came out, put the meter on the battery, it said 'Replace', which was true and not a marketing gimmick as proved above You should have between 13-14v when it's charging on the car, when cranking it should drop to 9-10v and no lower, and about 12-13v on the charger...

Hmmm....Bought a new battery today. Same problem!!
Weird, why would it start via jump leads but not with a new battery??
Any ideas?

Check the battery leads, especially the earth strap. When you use jump leads are you putting them both straight to the battery or are you putting the -tive lead to the block?

Bad starter connection or dodgy earth. What happens with a single battery, nothing or just very slow turning over. How are you earthing when you jump start earth to earth or earth to chassis, if its earth to chassis (of the car that wont start) then it could be a dodgy earth.
