Ok guys, potential car swap on the cards here. Currently both vehicles are taxed and MoTd.
Can we still sign each others v5s and drive away? If not, what do we need to do?

think this has been covered a few times - it's the same as buying a car except you'll both need to do following -
tax car online or 24/7 phone line when you pick the car up - give your bank details - done.
Phone insurance to get cover (or you could do this in advance - no change to this part really)
Drive away

We got stung on tax, just sold the wife's car on 1st nov, sent the docs off on the 1st and still got clobbered for the whole months tax.
There is a good chance you will both end up paying for the whole month if you're not careful. If you have enough time I would wait until the last day of the month, exchange the cars onto the other persons premises, then SORN them on the last day of the month before midnight. This should trigger your rebate on the tax.
Sign and date the logbooks for the1st and this way hopefully you won't loose the month on the car you sell.

Phone insurance to get cover (or you could do this in advance - no change to this part really) Is it not the other way around? You'll need the to be insured first, and on the database in order to tax it. I'm still a bit concerned about how much of a delay there is between getting insured and it appearing on the database in order to tax it online. I suppose we'll have to get a few real-world trials to see if the system works!

Such a pain in the ! Checking the cars out Sunday but won't be able to sort insurance until in the week so if all is well will meet up again to swap and we'll call up the tax people then I guess. 24/7 hotline sounds good - i'll have to look for the number in a minute.

Just my 2p worth... I insured a car for a day on temporary cover and managed to tax it for 6 months using the new DVLA system.

I sold my fiancées temporary 306 at the weekend. So the new keeper doesn't have to pay for tax for the rest of the month, I've agreed to delay the sending off of the tax disc for a refund. I'll post it just before the end of the month and then post the V5 after that, so they won't know it's changed keeper until it's next month. Yes, we still dated the V5 correctly before anyone mentions it...

Hi, there has to be an element of trust in doing that. Trusting that they don't do anything naughty with it, otherwise the authorities will come looking for you because you are the registered keeper and are supposed to be deemed to be accepting responsibility for it. There could be some awkward questions to be answered about not informing about change of owner in a timely manner.
I am not intending to be a killjoy, just pointing out a possible pitfall because you have no control on what they are doing with it.

Best way to swap would be on the 1st day of the month and agree to put the last day of last month on the v5. Slightly naughty but it worked for the previous owner when I bought my boxster on 1st November, previous owner got a full months refund for November and I taxed it from 1 November so no loss to either person.
And, for the records, you do not need to return the old tax disc, I still have the tax disc for the Porsche saying it is taxed to February even though it is actually taxed to Nov 15 and the previous owner got his refund. Refunds are automatic to the previous keeper, there is no request for a refund it is just done by the DVLA.

If you are buying a car that is already taxed then it will already be on the insurance database, of course you legally need to insure it yourself to drive it but because it is already insured by the seller you wont get any problems with the MID/ DVLA check when taxing it.

So I just taxed a car tonight and I don't believe insurance is checked.
If You listen carefully to the words said in the automated voice it says they are checking the mot but not the insurance.

Maybe they have realised that the insurance database doesn't update immediately and DVLA are more concerned about getting their money than if a person is insured.

Hi you can't assume the seller has the car insured if it's taxed, he may have transferred the cover to their new car. Plus would you let someone drive off with the car with your insurance on it?
