Just gone out to our Skoda Fabia as MOT retest this morning only to realise how grotty the steering wheel, gearknob and handbrake lever are. Damp morning makes them feel even worse. Originally I was just going to wipe off the dirty handprints from working on it yesterday but realise more drastic actions are needed. It's so thick you can scrape it off with fingernails Ring a bell with other people ! What is the best stuff to dissolve this horrible gunge as I don't want to scour the parts (nor scrape any more off with fingernails) but simply use something to soften and then wipe off. Cheers. I use paint prep wipes for things like this.

I've used baby wipes with much success in the past. Soapy enough to get everything off, gentle enough to not do any damage. Quick wipe over after with a damp cloth, job done.

Wife uses baby wipes for cleaning furnishings. They work great on car upholstery as well but never tried them on plastic & rubber - will now

Hi, I have found the stuff that works best for me is petrol, although a wipe over with wet wipes after if you think it might smell. Petrol works on mould as well and stops it coming back after a short period, which is more than can be said for so called sterilising sprays.

The worst place is often the indicator/wiper stalks, grunge seems to layer up on the reverse side. Be careful with the wipes on those though as it doesn't take much usually to start taking the printed symbols off.

All purpose cleaner and microfiber cloths. Tesco own brand " Daisy " is surprisingly good for these jobs. Mix it up around 10:1 with water in a spray bottle and you're good to go for the interior.

Whenever I get a "new" car it's one of the first things I do! Same here after seeing those episodes of Top Gear where they found the spit and bogies all over the steering wheel.
