Hi, I am planning to paint the manifold and down pipe black to make it presentable. Presently it has surface rust (don't they all unless they are stainless?). There are a few paints out there ranging from Halfords own brand, VHT, Eastwood etc. I read somewhere that Hammerite also works wonders and does not peel/flake off. Anyone got first hand experience and recommend products that may do the job well? And before you suggest, sending the exhaust away for it to be thermal coated etc is a non starter

Do not use Halfords VHT I painted my manifold in that and within minutes it had all flaked away. I've heard using bbq vht is quote good as its a better quality I guess

The BEST heat paint in the business was called PJ1, I've aerosol painted engines in this that still look great years later, although since they had a fire in the manufacturing plant, the remaining stock is now selling for over £20 a can - which kinda prices itself out of the market!!
So, I did a test on all the high temp paints I could find, VHT is not black, it dries a grey colour, Halfords just doesn't last, but the best of the rest turned out to be B&Q's Stove paint, dries satin black and stays that colour with heat. Its almost as good as PJ1, and less than half the price!
I always put the can in a jug of boiling water before using, as the heat ups the pressure and thins the paint.
Hope this helps!

Toolstation do a satin black high temp spray that works pretty well. under 7quid a can. we use it on exhausts all the time. I find the best results come from spaying it on then giving it a quick flash over with a blow torch.

Another vote for PJ1 if you can find some their engine and casing paint is wonderful stuff.

Painted my fiesta's manifold in white Hycote VHT, wire brush in the drill to remove as much rust as poss. As oztuning said, heat the can up in hot water first. Light coats and build up the layers, about 10 mins between coats. Once its fitted back on the car, run it for a few mins and then let it cool right down. Do this a couple of times to cure the paint. Been on there 6 months and car used daily, still looks mint and no colour change or flaking.

I painted my manifold when I rebuilt the engine. Started it up and it went brown instantly and flaked away shortly after.

I use 'carplan VHT' on exhausts and have also used it on a Chiminea with good results.

I haven't used it on an exhaust but I've used the pound land paint on calipers, suspension etc and it is actually quite good.
As for the original question BBQ / stove paint worked well for me.

I used poundland black spray to paint the casing of an aluminised steel back box, didnt think it would last two minutes but its still good [despite road dirt] after a year, dunno how it would be at the hotter end of the system but its probably worth a squirt for £1 !!

I've used Hammerite gloss black on my tail pipe and it burnt and flaked off within 100 miles!! Same goes for the middle box, which I now plan to cover in this miraculous Pound Land stuff. Well, it's worth a go, I suppose?!!
To add to the exhaust pipe question, I have wrapped my headers to keep the heat in the exhaust and help to reduce under bonnet temperatures, but has anyone used the Jet Hot coating approach and how much would it cost to coat a couple of V8 exhaust manifolds? The wrappings are pretty good value for money, but are quite bulky when compared with coatings. Is it really worth the extra outlay? One of the reasons that I want to change from exhaust wrap is that the fibreglass is so damn itchy!! I need to wear elbow length gloves when removing my headers, as the fibres get right into your skin. And please don't mention fibreglass balls!!!
