I've often thought this.
I once swapped an MGF alternator into a mk1 MR2 and apart from the wiring needing a little modification, it fit perfectly, the pulley was perfectly in line and apart from having to extended the mounting rail on the top a few inches (I used the MGF belt) it ran in the car for a number of months until I got a proper MR2 alternator.
I'm looking at getting a new alternator for my Starion as it appears the pulley is wrong in some way and it's shredding belts. It can either be loose and only charge the battery slightly or tight to spec and charge 14v+ and squeal under load and then snap after 10 minutes of driving. Frustrating I know and it means for the past two weeks, I can't drive it any further than about 5 miles at a time.
I looked at Shoguns and a couple of L300's on the weekend and the alternators looked the same as my Starion (they were all diesels), but want to make sure before buy one. None of them had pumps on the back, and the connectors were the same.
Motor factors don't stock my alt, but I know that Mitsubishi shared alts with Protons and Hyundais - it's a v belt (not ribbed).
How different are the pulley locations on various cars - did most alt manufacturers have a standard measurement where the pulley protudes from the body and the mounting points? I'm pretty sure the pulley position is pretty much standard on different models of alternators? What are the chances of the MGF and the MR2 being the same - over 10 years apart, different country of origin, different component manufacturer (Lucas, Nippon Parts, etc). Surely there has to be some standardisation of this type of thing?
