Overview
Here we have for sale 1990 MK1 Golf GTI Karmann Convertible. This Golf has been taken care of by previous owners and its relatively low mileage of 102,500 shows in just how clean and solid this car is underneath.
We never like to use the term ‘rust free’ on a 24 year old car, but this is one of the straightest, un-restored MK1’s we’ve seen in a long while.
The details of this car are as follows;
History
First registered on 18th May 1990, this Golf has had just 5 owners in total with the last owning the car for 4 years. The owner’s handbooks are present along with the service book, fully stamped up to approx. 82,000 miles/2003. Since then the car has been maintained by owners with receipts from the previous owner for work done, along with some for earlier years.
The car now has a little over 102,500 miles on the clock, which is believed to be genuine, given the condition of this car, but cannot be guaranteed as there are MOT certificates missing from 2000/2001 and 2004 to 2010. All others are present.
The car is MOT’d until 13th October 2015 and passed with no advisories. The car is also HPI clear and retains its original registration number.
Body
Overall the bodywork is in excellent condition. The Helios Blue metallic paint has responded well to a three-stage machine polish and carnauba wax and shines nicely. There appears to be no rust on the body and under the boot carpet and back seat are factory fresh and rust free.
This Golf has benefitted from a brand-new, blue mohair hood along with new foam seals and cables. This sets the car off beautifully. When we removed the old roof we were pleased to see that there was no rust on any of the bodywork hidden by the lower edge of the roof.
The car has had paint in areas in the past, done to an acceptable standard, but there are a few imperfections such as some fish-eyes in the paint on the bonnet plus a scuff on the near-side corner of the front bumper. These do not detract from the overall look of this car.
Mechanical/Running gear
As with the bodywork, the mechanicals of this Golf appear to be in excellent condition. The engine sounds sweet with no rattles or knocks and the car rides and handles well. The previous owner had replaced some of the shocks and springs as well as the front top mounts. The exhaust back box is also new.
During our time with the car, we have replaced the water pump and thermostat, cam cover gasket and one rear wheel cylinder that was weeping slightly. All brake components are in good condition with plenty of life left in them.
We also gave the engine a service with oil and filter, air filter, fuel filter, coolant and brake fluid. We also went through the K-Jet injection system to clean and set-up the metering head so that the engine is running as it should.
The cam belt was changed at 91,000 miles/3 years ago.
The only area on the car that is not fully sorted is the alloys. The silver parts of the wheels are in great condition and look fresh, however, the Helios Blue detailing is flaking off in places. A wheel refurbishment would be needed to make these wheels concours, however, we have priced the car according to their present condition.
Interior
The interior is in great condition for the age of the car and has no wear in the seat bolster material as you may expect.
All carpet, seats and trim are in good condition and the parcel shelf is good too, with no speaker holes. We have fitted some new floor mats in navy blue with contrasting, grey trim and the wind deflector and blue tonneau cover shown in the photos come with the car.
Everything works on the car, including the MFA. We have fitted the car with a brand new, JVC CD player/radio which includes AUX and USB inputs, along with an electric aerial.
Summary
This MK1 Golf GTI Convertible is truly one of the best un-restored cars we’ve seen in a long time. There’s really nothing for the next owner to do other than enjoy it all year round.
Any inspection is welcome and please contact us for further information. Over 50 photos can be found here - www.yesterdayscars.co.uk/available-cars/mk1-golf-gti-convertible/
