Solid Classic Jaguar – Not many left now
I am reluctantly selling the Jaguars in my collection due to a new job in Dublin.
This is a mechanically sound example of an old Series 3 saloon, and it is the rare and early 3.4 litre carburettor model.
Took me a while to find it, but I just don’t have the time to give it the TLC it deserves, so want to sell it on to a good home!
This was owned by an elderly gent since 1988, and then by his son in 2012. Has spent the majority of its life in the East End of London (quite fitting for a car of this calibre!). It was dry stored and off the road for around 15 years, hence the condition. I purchased this at the end of December 2013.
Previous owner stated that his Dad had the engine rebuilt in 1991 and the mileage set to zero on the odometer. It has since done 6k miles, and the mileage is estimated to be around 100k in total.
Comes with a boot full of spares, worth over £200. You can keep for future parts and sell off what you don’t need!
Powered by the ultra-durable 3.4 litre straight six engine. The power plant is still very strong and has good torque. You can’t quite believe its 34 years old now.
Reliable car, but takes quite a few cranks to get it going due to a worn out choke unit (once started and up to temperature, its fine and just glides along). It will cough and splutter when started, whilst it's getting itself together and coming up to temperature.
No overheating: gets to the correct temperature and sits there all day long. Uses no excess oil or water. Engine purrs as it should.
Even back then, Jaguar knew how to make a luxury saloon and this big cat is still so smooth, defying its age. It’ll put a lot of modern cars to shame!
Engine Oil Pressure, Battery Voltage, Coolant Temperature are all spot on. Due to the torque of the engine, it’s surprisingly good on fuel. At 70mph, it’s only doing 3k rpm.
Gear changes are as they should be on a car of this vintage, and all the gears select as they should. Nothing untoward.
Tyres and suspension are all spot on, so no worries there. Brakes seem fine, but remember this is a 34 year old car, so it isn't going to as sharp as a XJR. There is a slight weep on the OSR brake caliper, which was an advisory on the latest MOT and this can sometimes make the brakes feel a little 'spongy'.
During my ownership this year, I have spent over £600 on:
•4 x Brand New Matching Tyres
•New Battery (Still Under Warranty)
•Oil, Oil Filter and Spark Plug Service
•Stripping and Rebuilding SU Carburettors
•Tuning Carburettors
•MOT Preparation & General Once Over
•MOT Test
Previous owner had a new Full Exhaust System Fitted, New Chrome All Round, New Lights All Round, New Alternator, New Bushes & Ball Joints, New Number Plates Front & Rear, New Mud Flaps x 4. In total, over £2k has been spent on this Jag over the past few years keeping it mechanically and cosmetically up-to-date. Just needs a few little bits sorting to make it perfect.
Specification includes:
· Automatic Transmission
· Red Leather Interior
· Walnut Burr Trim
· Chrome Surrounds
· Original Jaguar Stereo
· Electric Windows x 4
· Chrome Wing Mirrors
· Front & Rear Arm Rests
· Power Steering
· Leather-Stitched Steering Wheel
· Vanity Mirror in Glove Box
· Tool Kit
· Jaguar Spare Wheel
Everything works as it should and there are no major warning lights on the dash. Brake warning light illuminates now and then, which would most likely be related to the brake caliper mentioned above.
The interior is in good condition for being 34 years old, but could do with being re-upholstered to be perfect. There are a few loose bits, as you would expect from an old Jag. The arm rest has cracked in places, as has the leather.
Comes with a new set of red carpets and floor mats, which just need to be fitted (these cost the previous owner £250).
Bodywork is generally very clean for the year, with only a couple of marks, blemishes & stone chips consistent with age / mileage.
A few very minor bits of corrosion. Small blister on the bonnet. Nothing major or untoward. NO RUST OR ROT. Still cleans up well and looks like a £6k+ car (please see photos). Will need a good polish as has not been washed for a few months now and paintwork is beginning to look a bit flat (will polish up back to standard). MOT tester commented on how clean she is underneath. Try finding another one in this condition for this sort of money!
Comes with: 1 Key, V5 Logbook, Old MOT Certificates, Original Jaguar XJ6 User Manuals, Service Booklet, Bills and Receipts, etc.
There is over £5k in Bills & Receipts for parts purchased and work carried out, mainly from Jaguar Main Dealers and Norman Motors Ltd (North West London Jaguar/Daimler Specialists).
If I were to keep it, I would:
· Get a new choke unit fitted to ease starting
· Have the carpets and mats fitted
· Fit a new brake OSR caliper
This would then make it a totally reliable & presentable everyday classic driver. Turns more heads than Ferraris!
It has MOT and ¼ tank of Fuel, so take the opportunity to acquire a classic Jaguar Series for less than family hatch money! Drive away a total bargain. These are now only going up in price…
To clarify - the Jag can be driven away once started (and Taxed), but like I mentioned, it will take a good while of cranking before it will fire up and run smooth (naturally, this will start to drain on the battery). Once running, it will run fine and I have confidence it will reach wherever you need to go. However, it is a 34 year old classic car which needs a new choke unit and an OSR brake caliper, so please bear this in mind and consider taking it away on a trailer just to be on the safe side. It is up to the winning bidder to make this decision.
Go on treat yourself – get that classic Jag you’ve always wanted!
Sold as seen - No warranty is given and / or implied. The car has been described honestly and to the best of my ability. Any inspection / viewing is welcome and highly encouraged, as everyone’s opinion of an old car will differ.
Collection / viewings on WEEKENDS ONLY please, as I work in Dublin during the week.
The car is located in Bracknell, Berkshire, RG12 post code. Please contact me on 07984 395400 for any further information or to arrange a viewing.
