Any opinion on these? I'm about to do a bulk order of air/oil/pollen filters to Rimmers and notice they have just started stocking K&N oil filters at around half the price of genuine LR. If you guys have had good experience with them, I'll order a batch.
Thanks in advance.

they're a rebranding of one of the other cheaper filters, but i cant remember who right now. one of the american magazines bought a shedload of different filters, tested them all and cut them up to check on their construction, etc, and i don't think the K&Ns faired very well. from memory, the brands to go for were mann, purolator, and fram (they didnt fair quite as good as the other two, but were ok.) i'll see if i can find the test, it seemed pretty thorough.

Thanks Dez, that would be great. I seem to remember they did one for air filters where K&N didn't fare too well either, hence my question. As I'll be ordering around ten or so, half the price is attractive, but I'm happy to go genuine for the protection if needs be.

As said, a good filter (possibly genuine where possible) will almost always filter better. You do not get something for nothing . Don't even mention Ford Mundaneo TDCI fuel filters in certain places... Years ago someone did test performance filters against stock items but also someone tested performance filters against each other for filtration. I seem to recall that K&N came out on top but some of the others were quite surprising (including big names like Blitz and HKS being poor in comparison, along with the eBay specials).

Hi, the trouble is the world of oil filters is a minefield. A while ago on another forum there was a discussion about K&N oil filters being better than others and Fram being the worst. I have to say I wasn't convinced and tried to do some research. The thing is there are so few filter makers that it almost doesn't matter about the name on the filter. Take a couple of examples, Sogefi owns Fram, Coopers, Purflux and some others. Go to the Purolator website click on company details and it sends you to the Mann Hummel website. OEM filters are no guarantee of quality because car makers don't make filters, they buy them in the same as a lot of other parts they use. Going back to Sogefi if you click on their clients list, Land Rover is in there along with a lot of car manufacturers some high end. So are Fram now a good filter? You decide!! Now, I accept that filter makers may have different quality filters in their range, but how do you know which is which and who has which quality. Quite frankly Even the cheapest filter will last a few thousand miles,so why not increase the frequency of your oil filter change?

i think it was this guys findings i was reading. realistically, its about as impartial as youre going to get when it comes to something like this. Hmm, interesting reading. So K&N are rebranded Mobil 1 which he seems to rate apart from price. Hi, the trouble is the world of oil filters is a minefield. Colin I tend to change every 5,000kms as a matter of course anyway, so not putting the filter under excessive pressure. Last change was at 2,000 as I'd just given it a good thrashing around on new oil, the next will be 3,000, then monitored. Looking at the article Dez pointed to, then if they are rebranded Mobil 1 being offered at just over half the price of OEM, they've got to be worth a punt. Thanks for the input guys.
