This is a bit of a question/experiment.
So my GTI has been for sale for 3 weeks now with little interest. (800 views & 14 watchers but no offers) Having looked around on ebay & autotrader, mine was coming back at about the cheapest for it's miles/owners/history.
I have just bumped the price up by £500 which makes it nearer the middle ground price wise.
Has anyone adopted this approach before? I am really curious to see if I get more interest with a car that is now more expensive lol.

Hi, although I have not done it (I hate selling cars). I have known it to work, a mate used to do it, because if it's cheap people think "what's wrong with it", Plus it gives you a bit more wiggle room for the inevitable haggling. I would think some of the watchers are waiting to see what it goes for or are waiting for the price to drop if it doesn't sell first time.

Nope never put the price up, don't think I've dropped the price either but then I've never been one of those in a rush to sell. Infact I tend to forget they are for sale.
I advertise it at a price I think is about right, taking in to account what it owes me, market trends, time of year.
This time of year is terrible for selling its cold, wet and Christmas is coming.
If it was mine I would be looking at the websites that cater for that car and appeal to the specialists/enthusiasts on there its one reason why when I buy a car the first thing I do is sign up to there popular website, so when it comes to selling there is always scope to have it on there and people can see that you have genuinely cared for the car.

I did think the price I was asking was fair, until I looked at what people are asking for cars with 50k more on the clock and tatty interiors.
Not really in a rush to sell it, the tax/mot/insurance are all paid up until June so doesn't make much difference, would like my drive back though lol.
I agree, it is a terrible time to be selling, it should have been for sale in Sept but my private plate took ages to come off.
With the current price I have a lot of wiggle room lol.
I was signed up to the MK5 GTI club forum, but never posted on it as it was either talking about £2k wheels or the correct polishing procedure... wouldn't feel right sticking in on there having never posted lol.

i always put stuff up top dollar, as you say if its cheap people think its curse word.
i put my crx up for £2200 in 2007 as it was full of mot and no rot. it sold pretty quick. the bloke that bought it was one of those guys who thought he knew it all (but was apparentt he didnt) and based it on being the most expensive one he could find locally, therefore it must have been good...
i put it up at £2200 to see what would happen and keeping in mind haggling.
i have subsequently done that with ebay buy nows and it works the same.
BUT its only really with odd things where there are not many available. i doubt you could do that with a ford focus just because there will always be another around the corner. you might find that with a GTI as they're kinda common.
just play off its strengths at the end of the day and be plainly honest with any issues it has, helps people be at least a little more confident in you as the seller. last thing you want is people coming back to you complaining of issues you never mentioned.

Its doesn't matter if you have 1 or 100 posts if you can post it there then do it as that will have people that know people that will be in the market if there not in the market themselves.
Take loads of pictures everyone loves loads of pictures detailing everything, dress it up and write a great review of the car.
I sold a £350 106 XSI for £1350 to a guy that found it via the 106 owners forum. Now granted I invested a lot of time in the car and it did come with a Saxo VTS and half a turbo conversion. But it also had no interior and just 2 seats but made the most of its selling points and it was for sale for about 3 hours and I could have sold it 10x over. I sold it about 4 years ago but I still have the odd email asking if its still for sale or if I know where it is now as there interested in the car.

IMHO, eBay is a shocking place to sell a car. The only cars that fetch strong money on eBay are very rare, low mileage mint examples of retro/classic cars. This is coming from my experience.
Anything modern or run of the mill will struggle to sell there.
If I was you, I`d certainly be putting it on pistonheads and marque specific forums. I`d even give Autotrader a shot, although it`s expensive and I think your pricing has to be pretty much spot on to get any interest.
Good luck though. If you`re in no rush to sell, I`m sure there`ll be a buyer for the car somewhere.

Thanks for all the replys on subject involving such modern car chaps.
Compass - ive never had any luck with Autotrader if I'm honest, but might give it a go. Not in too much of a rush as apart from petrol, the Golf is all paid up until May/June/November 2015 - would just like the drive space lol.

To be honest, I don't use Autotrader either, as the type of cars I sell are more suited to other advertising media. However, the traders in a close by unit to mine deal in more modern stuff, and they sell all theirs through Autotrader. I suppose it's horses for courses really. It all costs money, and if you're in no rush, maybe try a few. Although its not really suited to the modern golf, stick it on car and classic. At the end of the day, its a free advert, and it just takes one person to take a look.at it to buy it.
