Just got my BMW back from the garage/MOT place (passed ) but it needed a few things. Rear backbox, wipers, a track rod end and new rear discs & pads. The guy said take it easy on them because of the bedding in. Started driving and everything was fine while I was in traffic, although I could feel the brakes/handbrake slightly on. I got onto a bigger road and went upto 40, and the whole car starts shaking like shitting dog. Got out and had a look to make sure they had tighten'd up the wheels (heard too many storys about them not) but they were fine. Is it just because the brakes need to be worn down a bit or is there another problem?

i've just done pads and discs all round on my volvo and it doesnt do that, and it don't sound right to me.could be serious or could be something as simple as the garage knocking the balance weights off the wheels, what ever it is best not drive it until you 've sussed it,don't fancy dealing with another RR insurance claim.

That was what I though. I was going to drive back to the garage, but the by the time I had got out of the traffic it was too late to turn round and go back. jolly pain in the backside... I'm going to have to go back... again! 3rd bloody time!!! [edit] Quick question... Do you need to change the bearings when changing the discs on 520's? I heard somewhere you do?

Does not sound right to me.
On another note, when my discs are worn I always change the bearings while i am at it, you may as well as your going to have to fit a set so why not a nice spanking new set.
Of course this is a garage and they would not

Of course this is a garage and they would not Exactly! FFS!!! I'd have done it (OK, OK, learning how to do it buy ripping them apart and trying to fix them) myself if I had more time, but I need the car for work while my Mini is off the road.

Quick question... Do you need to change the bearings when changing the discs on 520's? I heard somewhere you do? eh? what the...!? and no. in that order. rear wheel bearings are a major a***ache to do. even BMW isn't that stupid. maybe its got the wrong pads or curse word pads so causing the brakes to be on and warping the discs in the process. warpped discs (the cheapo ones tend to warp, bmw ones never in my experience) tend to vibrate and feel nasty only when you apply the brake and it pumps back through the pedal. edit, I just read its the rears you had done, my bad. it tends to be front ones that affect the car the most. maybe the garage has made a mistake and not tightened something up; although I can't think what, there's no suspension in the way of changing the discs? have they tightened the trackrod up? or just set it at a stupid angle, which is common if they were working quick and sloppy. whatever it is, it sounds like they've made a balls up of the handbrake adjustment. maybe they took the propshaft apart while looking for the £20 examiners supplementary fee? LOL!

I heard the bearings thing off a mechanic. My first thought was 'cobblers' but after Lewis mentioned the bearings I started wondering if he was right? I'm going to just take it back there tomorrow morning and get them to sort it first thing. Ironicly, I took my one mini to a garage opposite them about 5 years ago and they destroyed the bearings on that

Dan- Why was it that the rears needed doing? When i had it checked it was the fronts and the rears didnt need touching other then the handbrake adjustment?!?!??!
Also that Trackrod end was a new one on me...
But other then that, what on earth have they don't to cause a vibration??? Did it feel like it was coming from the rear or otherwise?

Sorry, just checked the sheet again and it was the fronts that were done, but they changed the pads on the back as they were pretty worn. Went to drive to the garage this morning all fired up to have an argument with them and the car drove perfect!?!?!?! Everything was fine with it, no shaking or anything! and yea, I could definatly feel the rear o/s wheel shaking while moving. It was the nearside track rod end that was replaced because it was knackered, thats the only thing it failed on (I had the brakes and exhaust done before the MOT).

BMW Shaking badly ...
I know it's just passed the M.O.T etc. but have you had a look at the rear bushes and torsion bar/anti-tramp bar mounts?

well fornt discs will cause more of a shake, but obviously not from the O/S/R like you mentioned. even if the hub nut was loose it wouldn't really shake much as they're a cartridge bearing. maybe the discs wasn't centralised properly over the hub if they removed it? has the tyre deformed and they simply didn't notice as they done a visual tread depth check while the car was on the floor? whatever it is it certainly seems odd. I really hope you get to the bottom of it and in 10 years of being a bmw specialist, I have never changed the wheel bearings because the discs were fooked. if you need any extra advice minidan, feel free to PM me
