My mk2 is a 1987 type 19 1.8 8v gti on 185k miles. MOT until December 2014, but with what I've had done to it theres no reason why it won't sail through
Only had it since August and I don't want to sell it but I need something cheaper to run and more practical as I want to start saving for a house.
This is the true GTI, the original 8v, no power steering, no fancy extras, just the stripped back driving experience. It's an absolute joy on a country lane, sticks to the road like glue and loves to rev.
Since I've owned it I've worked on getting everything in good order so far and made a few subtle modification to enhance the driving experience a little
Full service including oil and filter, air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, cambelt and water pump
Brand new stainless steel straight through exhaust system from downpipe back, it is very loud but sounds really good. Pops and bangs on lift off, makes me smile every time
Brand new jom coilovers
Gear linkage overhaul, so it changes gear quickly and it's all nice and tight
New cv joint
2 new wheel bearings
New rocker cover gasket
Always run on shell v power
It has nice clean 15" BBS RA wheels with all centre caps and yoko parada spec 2 195/50 tyres all with around 4mm of tread left
All brake discs and pads were changed not long before i bought the car and have years left in them
The engine is very quiet for an old school VW engine, its not tappy or rattly like many
The exterior cleans up well and has only very slight surface rust in one or two places (as pictured) and a few parking dings but this can be easily fixed, the only dent that looks like it might be a pain is one in the bonnet
The underneath is 100% solid and rust free, i've owned cars half the age of this that haven't been anywhere near as good
Sunroof still works and doesn't leak even during a jetwashing (rare on these)
Apart from the few modifications that i've made its a very original car that hasn't been messed with. These are getting harder to find all the time and it's the rarer type 19 model, with quarterlight windows and LHD windscreen wipers among other subtle differences.
Bad points:
Exterior could do with a good polish but it's in really nice shape for its age, I just haven't had a chance to do it as of yet.
The interior is in good condition, bar the usual bolster wear on the drivers side and slight sag in the back of the headlining.
The reverse lights don't work, the fuses and bulbs have been checked and are all good. I've read that sometimes it can be bad contact on the switch on the gearbox but i haven't yet had a chance to look into it.
The door handles are a little funny to open (common problem on these)
Full beam light on dash doesn't come on when full beam is on, seems to be just the led that has gone.
The cassette player still work but the speakers don't unfortunately although I do have new speakers that will be supplied with the car.
I also have the original quad light front grill that will go with the car
Overall it's a good honest car and i've been as honest as I possibly can, whoever buys it will not be disappointed. With a weekends work the few little things I've listed could easily be rectified, I just haven't had a chance to get round to them yet between doing everything else to it.
I believe the price is fair, ive put far more into it in the last few months than what I'm asking. If you want any more info then contact me as I've listed above.
Thanks, Karl
