Still trying to diagnose and ignition fault what I thought was initially damp, then the coil, then the em9 ignition module, on the Range Rover.
I mention how I had it running sweet on LPG then it failed totally, over on the difflock forum, and what I had done to try and fix it.
One of the guys mentioned fitting a Halfords dizzy cap, then a month later, suffering similar problems and the carbon had crumbled and the spring was broken. Guess what, about 4-6 weeks ago, I fitted a Halfords dizzy cap. I'm going to get it off and check it, but until I get chance, does anyone have recent experience of dizzie caps failed within weeks rather than years?
BTW, I have a bought something to replace it, so I want to fix it and sell it as a decent runner. Cheers All.

Their plug leads are rubbish too. Kept electrocuting me and were arcing off on stuff. I replaced them and all my running problems magically went away.

Amazingly, Halfords don't actually make there own brand parts. Ignition parts are rebranded usually Lucas or QH IIRC. I'm sure someone on here works for Halfords and can probably confirm this or ask someone behind the parts counter.

I did buy plugs, leads and cap. The NGK plugs were spot on, the cap appeared OK, but the minute I put the plug leads on, the truck failed to run at all.
Swapped the old Bosch ones back on, and it fired up straight away.
Looks like it might be the cap then. Will need to check.

When i first got my rangie i replaced the rotor arm cap leads plugs on the engine.it ran fine for about a day then had this really bad missfire not thinking it was all the new parts i fitted i went through all the usual checks and replaced the ignition module.Still no better i added extra earth straps.Still not getting anywhere,in fact it was getting worse .Then i set the gap in the dizzy for the electronic pick up which worked for about 5 mins then it would missfire. In the end i found this small shiney amost w shaped bit of metal in side the dizzy that turned out to be the the metal contact that locates on the dizzy spindle.I still kept my old rotor and cap so i cleaned up the old rotor and that was the end of it.On the plus side all the stuff i had done in the mean time had made the engine run sweeter than ever.

Right, I know they probably aren't much better, but I'm off to Partco or Andrew Page's at the weekend I think (don't work close to anywhere stocking V8 parts).
While I have the cap off, how difficult is it to reattach the vac capsule arm.
I reckon the timing is way out because you can't manually advance it any further as the vac capsule digs into the edge of the top hose on the water pump housing. Either that or it has an SDi dizzie fitted. To rotate the dizzy enough to fit the new ignition module, I needed to remove the clamp, unbolt the capsule, then lift the dizzy up to get enough turning clearance to fit the module. Don't worry I put it back in the same place and didn't turn the engine until it was all tight again.
I think a new cap is in order, as the Halfords one may be shagged. Time to number those Octoplug leads I guess as there is very little clearance and the cap is a really tight fit.

Ive had the carbon instert in the centre of a halfords dizzy cap "dissapear" after a month or so. Left me stranded. Halfrauds curse word.

Nah, I just bought normal off the shelf what every man in the street buys. It was open when I needed and was there. I would expect even a basic £8-10 dizzie cap to last more than a month, when a "highstreet" trader put's there name to it.
If I had bought a "It's a Bosch but made by Kurdish refugees in Istambul, so costs a third of the price, ignore the bad spelling on the box, it is genuine, honest it really is" from From Honest Abduls import motor parts on Ebay for £3 instead of £8 for a real one, then I think that would be valid.

Jack... we don't get to find out details like that! Really? If your still using the CMS, PTS etc computer system you can. If you go into whichever of the four options has the stock control section on it and put in the 6 digit item code it should show the supplier as well as stock movements. ;D
