Does anyone know the law on exhaust exits? Its a diesel , A vw t4 to be exact....
I'm lowering it, But my job takes me up and down alot of rutted tracks etc, So do do this I'm looking to move the centre box and possibly lose the rear one and id like to hide the exhaust so it exits maybe behind the rear wheel , or even just rear lower arm area?
I know this is something that gets done in the states with hotrods etc, exiting after the up and over at the axle.
Ive seen modern cars that have the exhaust exit under the rear bumper, hardly visable, But wondered if there is an actual guideline ? Or will it fail mot?

Only has to be 30cm away from a passenger door for MOT IIRC , unless the rules have changed in the past 5 years , I had a side exit on a few cars.
You may wish to bear in mind , under the car may gas out the cabin.

The exhaust on mine cuts off about half way along the rear door but in the middle of the car because there's no room for it to be any longer and not had any problems with MOT or police.

Mine also exits under the sill pretty much in the middle of the rear door, never had an issue. Apart from the noise.

I've known of a few people over the years who've had exhaust gasses creep into their modern cars from hidden tailpipes under the bumpers and get nasty headaches from it, not something I would advise doing. Best place for the tailpipe to exit to help reduce the gasses getting back in is to the side towards the back.

Thanks for the quick replys guys I'm hoping that being a diesel , I'm less likely to get the gas creap into the van, Also my van is an actual van so i run a full bulkhead still. Id planned on running a pipe straight out under the van , as i realy don't like side exits too much anymore, They look great on alot of things, But i don't think they suit vans. It gets done alot on t4s now, And it just looks half arsed... Also if i was to run the exhaust out under the sill as a side exit it would negate the reasoning behind it, as it would be lower than the sill and therefore lose me the ground clearance I'm trying to get back.. The only other option i was considering was to exit it inside the wheelarch, i.e up and behind the rear wheel. ? ?

As long as no gases can enter the cabin and the exhaust pipe can not cause harm to pedestrians or anyone exiting the car it should be legal.

The worst one my boss came in complaining of headaches, he had a Vauxhall Astra van diesel, early 2000's model. Then again, the exhaust fell off my diesel Mondeo ahead of the rear axle, drove it around like that for a few months as nobody would tailgate a black soot stained former-silver Mondeo with the exhaust bouncing about underneath

With mine i found theres a way to "roll coal " as the yanks say If I'm sat at a set of lights or traffic etc. And i pull away, I hold it at around 2500rpm for 5 seconds while moving in first, so only crawling along. And then just stamp on it, and it just pours it out. I found out by accident when my gear linkage was playing silly buggers and i just wanted to keep moving while i tried to find second, when i throttled that happened.... Try not to do it tho... Costs money Mine is a TDI convered formerly TD t4 transporter, So i cant adjust the pump to account for smoke, So i hope it doesnt smoke at idle if i lose a silencer...

My Mondeo didn't smoke as much as some, in three years and 90k miles I never washed it. Ever My old Vectra was the best for smoke, drive like a granny for a week (600 miles), then sitting at 70mph knock it into 3rd and floor it, would sit there holding 70 with thick smoke obliterating the rear view Modern cat equipped diesels don't tend to make much noise when the silencers fall off, the turbo and cat are very good mufflers.

Best way to roll coal in mine is to stick it in 5th at 15mph and floor it. Because of the cut off exhaust you get a wall of smoke out of the back thatd make James bond proud.

Vastly depends on the car - mine took modding to make the level of smoke shown in the pic, as it's a mechanical pump. That smoke however, was in neutral
