I bought some discs 2nd hand which have been unused for some time and are coated in surface rust> I want to clean them up before fitting them. Whats the best method of removing the rust without damaging the discs?

Mine were pretty badly rusted up after 4yrs standing outdoors. I attacked mine with a knot wheel on the grinder, but I'm not sure that's the best way to do them. They look OK now but I have only done 50yrds up the road and back so far as the rest of the car isn't ready yet.

if it bothers you, just use a light sandpaper, personally , i would let the brake pads do it for you if its only lightly coated.

I've used the wire wheel on grinder and coarse sandpaper on brake discs and drums, not died yet.

Are they new discs that have rusted from standing or used discs ?
If used then consider having an automotive engineering company grind them. This used to be a common practice but the popularity of vented discs and cheap solid disc means no longer viable a lot of the time. You also used to be able to buy abrasive pads that tidied up rusty discs whilst still providing braking effort. I assume you fitted them for just a short period and then changed to proper pads when discs clean !

 the rusty thing on the left, replaced the dead disc on the right (pad had worn down to the metal). All I did, was ride the brakes for a mile or so to clean them up (new pads on both sides) |
