Hello Folks,
How do you assss the health of a dual mass flywheel when it is removed and sat n the bench? It is possible to move the assembly by hand but I don't know if this is normal os if the unit is goosed. There were no reported issues when the assembly was still fitted to the donor car before I got my mits on it.
It's from a 2001 (I think) Jaguar S-Type 3.0ltr manual (obviously).
Cheers.

I have a Rover 75 diesel with a dual mass and fitted a second hand unit about 80k miles ago, the manual for the Rover said something about 1" free rotational movement being acceptable. More than that will probably lead to heavy knocking through the transmission and potentially leading to some form of failure, also if it rocks about the central pivot it's almost certainly scrap.

On a related note, does anyone know how to assess the health of a DMF while still fitted? I think mine is on the way out but I don't know for sure

That's good to know, thanks for that. This one from memory also has about 1" of free rotational movement before it resists. I also incidently own a diesel 75 as a daily. It's not quite as good as the 1.8 Turbo 75 it replaced but a blumin good car for the money still and amazing on fuel for it's size.

Scrub that, it's not 1", that would be huge! It's 5/64" (4.5mm) at the outer edge.

A bit of rotation movement is not a prob. It's if you can rock the face horizontally ( like the wheel bearing test) If there's much axial movement it's goosed

Thanks for the replies, that's great! I have picked up a single mass flywheel from a Mondeo ST220 cheap which will bolt up but the clutch is in a different location (closer to the block by some margin) and the starter ring gear is a different ratio (starter motor swap not compatible due to mounting style). I may persevere a little out of interest but will probably stick to the now serviceable original. Cheers!
