I bought a car at the weekend, its just a shell, no engine, box, rear axle. the Vin plate is missing, but it does have a REG plate front and rear, as well as 3 part mouse eaten tax discs.
Looked at the DVLA website for a V62 Form, but it asks for a VIN number or the application will be returned.
Is there anyway i can apply for a log book?
DVLA vehicle status check says it was last taxed March 2004
thanks

Officially no, but I'm sure someone will be along that can HPI it for you. Got to love our red tape system.

You could always buy a vin and v5 from ebay and not tell anyone...
Legally I would have thought it would have to be a Q reg.

It can be worth a try filling out a V62 form without the reg number, and putting a covering letter in explaining that you do not know the reg. I had heard this could be done on motorbike forums and have done it myself twice with success (again on motorbikes, but I can't see that making a difference)
My covering letter also gave the year of manufacture and date of sale, I got the V5 through a couple weeks afterwards.
Otherwise I'm told the police can look it up. My plan had that not worked was to go to the station reception when it was quiet and say I was considering buying it, could they please check it wasn't stolen, then ask for the reg when they had the details up.
[edit] oops, misread your post. Thought it was the other way round. Still may be worth sending off a V62 and covering letter.

Depending on the age of the car it should have the VIN number stamped into the chassis or bodyshell. Find out where it is likely to be stamped and get looking.

If the car is pre 1981 then yes you can be filling in the form and writing a cover letter to explain the riveted on VIN plate which had rusted away has been lost although they may want to check the car and without any running gear you are in murky water.

They don't give you full vin, just last 4 digits It shouldn't really be difficult to figure out what the chassis number should be given the last 4 digits. I've had loads of bike log books through in the past without putting the frame number down. Even managed to get a logbook from the frame number with only a partial number plate (all the last owner could recall)

One way of proving the age and origin of a car is having the original engine when you say 'done a lot to it' what do you mean?
