I think that once i've sold my Ren 5 i will be getting a Volvo , but as of yet can't decide which one. I'm torn between the 300 and 200 series at the moment and would like to know of any experince you've had with either of them. I also have a mate who has just emigrated to Sweden , and he tells me he is living almost next door to Swedens biggest Volvo breakers yard, which houses prototypes and all sorts, which aren't for sale. So maybe parts won't be a problem. -which is the best car as standard? -Which is most tuneable/modable? -which is easiest to work on? Which would have off the shelve tuning parts? Cheers anyhelp making my mind up would be appreciated. I know this is a 242 but still its cool

Basically with 300s you have the 340 and 343,345 variations. These have either a 1.4 or 1.7 Renault engine in. You can more or less drop in a Volvo 480 or Renault 5 turbo engine, but a better conversion is to fit a Clio 16v or Williams 1.8 or 2 litre engine. The running gear is fairly weak on the 340's.
The 360's are all 2 litre volvo engines. The lower models are carbs, GLT's are injection. They're between 110-120bhp as standard but not that quick. Engine swaps are fairly easy. You can fit a 2.3 from a volvo 740 for a nice torque increase, though the ultimate engine is a B230 turbo from a 940. With the right tuning bits you'll see easily the wrong side of 500bhp with one. The 360 running gear is stronger, however it will go bang pretty easily with anything near 300bhp and heavy launches. Upgrades are difficult as the gearbox is at the rear.
The front suspension is Mac struts. You can chop 2 coils off which will lower the front 3". With standard wheels thats as much as you can go as you're left with about an inch between the tyre and inner wing. The method i'm using to cure this is to fit 13" wheels with low profile tyres. This will drop the car 40mm more than standard due to the smaller diamater. However I will also be able to lower the car 4 1/2" which means I get about a 6" drop overall.
The rear is on leaf springs. Keeping everything else standard you can fit 60mm lowering blocks. You can modify some bits and fit bigger lowering blocks. However they're pretty easy to 5 link and with that you can drop it however much you like. As the gearbox/diff is mounted to the shell and a separate axle is used for suspension theres loads of clearance for lowering.

200s are a doddle to work on. Suspension is straight forward, coils front and rear. Easy to drop by cutting springs. Uprated anti-roll bars are very worthwhile - available from IPD in the USA. It is quite straight forward to run twin ARB's front and back, which again helps a lot. A GLT would be best to start with as they have uprated suspension (shocks, springs and ARBs) as standard. All of the red block engines are bullet proof, 2.3i will give you most go, but still no flying machine. No standard 200 turbo in RHD as the steering column and brake servo are in the way for the turbo itself. A new manifold will get round this and allow instalation of a 2.0 or 2.3 turbo lump from a 940 (or 760). It is possible to run these with a 16v head as well and see BIG power without too much grief. Gearboxes will either be 4speed with or without overdrive or 5 speed (M47). The 5 speed in particular can be a weak link in a big power car, and an M90 5 speed from a 940 is a good swap. They really are built like tanks, I liked mine a lot.

Forgot to put in the last reply, but. As you say you can put Clio motors in 300's, i've seen this done a few times, so is it literaly a straight swap bar the wiring etc?

I've got a 244 GL, it's the 2.1 injection 3 speed auto and is dog fcuking slow.
It's thirsty and basically tops at about 85 as anything over that it's straining and using even more fuel than usual. IMO it either needs a different final drive or a 4th.
In it's defence it looks cool and is perfect for driving round London.
It also just went through it's MOT with only one advisory on a blown numberplate bulb which was a bit of a result since we've not done much to it since we got it in December.
At a guess if you're looking for tuneability you'd want one of the later 200 series turbos so you can just wind it up.

240s are tough as old boots, easy to work on, reliable and pretty rust resistant. Turbos foul the steering column though.

Mine's really starting to decline on the rust front. It's all around the windscreen and the the doors (only on one side ) It seems to have missed/had fixed the typical 244 types usual problem in the boot with the spare wheel wells and on one side the boot's nearly bowing bacause of it. I think that 5 months outside hasn't helped but it still needs sorting/new panels sourcing. The doors all still have the action of a Swiss Banks gold vault though. Once thing that strikes me is that there's so much room in that bay for pretty much whatever you'd like to put in there.

You can more or less drop in a Volvo 480....... 400 series turbo engine is awesome, 1.7 turbo with 120 bhp, easily tuned to 200 bhp with turbo, chip and injectors. A bloke at power engineering had a 340 with a 480 turbo engine in it and that was pushing on 250 bhp. The turbo engine its self will go on to the original 1.7 340 engine mounts and transmission. But the wiring is a fooking nightmare its one of the most over sensor-ed engines I have ever seen, bloody wires every where. If you want more info on tuning 200 series see www.turbobricks.com
