Are these rubbish or not? I quite like the idea of a modern-ish Boxer-powered Alfa Romeo but without the weight and technical bastardisation (based on a Fiat Tipo) of the early 145/146s And a nice cheap one on the eBay just now.

They are awesome,.. I had a 1.7 Green Cloverleaf, and if a bin lorry hadn't written it off I'd probably still have it ,.. still on my list of cars to own again...
After 89 they are less rust prone as well..

I've got a series 3 16v 33. Had it for about 5 years or so, been off the road the last few years because it now needs some work done. They are great cars to drive, the 16v needs more use of the revs over the 8v, but it sounds absolutely glorious. The 16v is very sporty to drive, probably more so than the 8valvers. They are really the last of the proper FWD Alfas, so although still pretty worthless at the moment will be very likely a future collectable. The later ones are a lot more rust resistant for sure, my 93 model only needs some work where the front bumper brackets bolt through the inner wing. I've seen a few with rot round the fuel filler cap area and the metal under the plastic panel at the area below the windscreen though. I haven't posted any pics of mine yet because it's in the garage lost amongst a sea of junk!

i was working for an Alfa dealership when these cars where new... and i am still not sure, if i should love or hate the 33 ;D Built quality was sometimes very strange, cars built at the same day when Naples soccer team had a match where shocking.... but i think i still love them.... my favourite is the 33 16V Sportwagon... though especially the wagons seem to be rusting more than the others.... engine wise they are bullet proof, even the 1.4 with 90 BHP is ok.... and the 33 is one of the few cars you can change the timing belt with the bonnet closed ;D
i would prefer a later 33, they have power steering and are better to drive... if you want a 4WD then the earlier version is better; the later ones had a magnetic coupling which doesn't work most of the time....
