Basically i've just finished my 2nd year at uni studying motorsport technology and now have to find a work placement for a year. I had one sorted at a WRC team but they've said they can't afford me at the last minute so.... Anybody work for/own any companies who could take me on? Something motorsport related would be nice. I am willing to work for free but a bit of cash to help towards accomodation would be nice. Not bothered where in the country (or even abroad!) it is. I can Arc, Mig and TiG (need more practice on ally tho) weld and i've got a lot of experience in fabrication. I've designed and built my own chassis and suspension systems so have a good knowledge of that. I'm also a fairly handy machinist, and pretty decent at bodywork. Generally i'm fairly easy going, but a very hard worker. I work better under pressure and i'm ok working in teams and on my own. Anyway thats about it. Off back to bed now as I had a well dodgy takeaway yesterday and its not been my friend. Matt P.S couple of examples of stuff i've fabricated Matt

Sorry not very helpful but: What uni are you at? How much of ^^^^^that sort of thing have you learnt at uni? I'm at Leeds uni doing Auto eng, but I'm starting to think that I may have been better off elsewhere (although I am only just finishing first year)

Hey matt, Ive sorted my placement out recently, ime on the same/similar course to you. Few pointers:
-NEVER describe yourself as "ok in a team", never give any downers on your personality! -Get a good portfolio in a snazzy presenty thing. Worked miracles for getting my job, just went to the printing shop and printed off all my CAD work, then slipped a few shots from the cars ive built in, and it made it easier to explain all i have done in the past few years! -Pick some companies and pester until they give you a job! took a mate of mine 4 months of 4 calls a week...but he got his placement and I for one am VERY jelous of it!
But good luck in your job though! Reminds me i need to send off my contract (managed to get a placement at Eaton truck transmissions! not glamarous but its experience and only for a year!)

skamanfrank- ime doing auto eng at sheffield hallam, and I havent learnt jack curse word about fabricating...etc.. amazingly I am one of 3 people who have built their own car from scratch out of about 30 in my year. Ive had to learn everything off my own back (welding/machining...etc) as all ive done in 2 years is a tiny amount of CNC and some centre lathe (both I just zipped through and got the marks as I had done them before!) If you want to learn fabbing....go and make stuff in the workshops (normally in the bowels of big buildings I have found in most uni's?), get friendly with the tech's and you can make anything you want! and only just noticed your going into 2nd year..... have fun first year is a doddle compared! edd

Do curse word all fabrication - the course is curse word tbh I can honestly say i've not learnt a thing in the 2 years i've been there. I've complained a few times about it, as they're teaching us stuff like calculating loads on a beam and how ABS systems work etc, but apart from me and maybe 3 or 4 others nobody even knows the basics of cars. 95% of the people on my course wouldn't be able to describe castor, camber, KPi etc etc and 70% of them don't have any idea what different suspension setups are called i.e. double wishbone, mcpherson struts etc.
I'm the only person on my course who has done any fabrication work like that at all. Theres plenty of people who have modded cars but its all bolt on stuff.
Similar to eddie i've had experience of stuff of fabrication before so luckily i've passed all the technical stuff easily. In the 1st year we had to do some work on an MK kit car. Think some students started it 2 years before us, and it is a complete shed. Never seen so many bodges on one car - things such as they bought the wrong seats that were too wide but wanted em cramming in. It pushed the bolsters in so you couldn't sit in the seat you sat on top of it.
