Overview
This is the private sale of my 1990 MK2 Golf GTI 16 valve. This car has been thoroughly looked after by the last few owners, including myself and has benefited from a full top and bottom end engine rebuild within the last 25,000 miles, partial re-spray and over £3,000 spent on this car in my 14 months of ownership. Needless to say, this is a very tidy example of a MK2 Golf GTI 16v.

The detail of this car is as follows;
History
This MK2 Golf has had seven owners in total and was first registered on 5th November 1990. There is a mountain of paperwork with this car, including receipts for everything I’ve spent on the car, plenty from previous owners including all receipts for the engine rebuild and all MOT’s and most tax discs from the last 10 years. Even the original purchase receipt for the car from when new is in the file, along with VW owners hand books and sales brochures.
The car now has a little over 169,000 miles on the clock, but don’t let this put you off as most mechanical components have been replaced or refurbished.
The car is MOT’d until 23rd July 2015 and passed with no advisories.
A spreadsheet is available showing all work and expenses incurred during my ownership of the car.
Body
Overall the bodywork is in excellent condition. The only rust on the car was under the off-side front arch trim and around the tailgate. Both of these panels have just been replaced with original VW used, but rust free panels and the front end, off-side and tailgate of the car have all benefited from fresh paint in the last few days.
As a result, the Pearl Grey Metallic paintwork shines like new and the body work needs nothing now, with only a couple of minor marks/chips remaining in the paint on the near-side
The only outstanding issue is that when the trim was off the car whilst the paint was being done, the off-side front arch trim got damaged (cracked on the edge.) A replacement is currently being sourced and will be fitted to the car.
Mechanical/Running gear
As mentioned above, the engine has had a full rebuild as a result of head gasket failure. This took place in 2009/25,000 miles ago (approx.) and a new head was fitted, with bores re-honed, new piston rings, bearing shells, gaskets and all other associated parts required for the rebuild. The receipts for all parts are in the history file and photos are available of the engine rebuild.
As a result, the engine drives beautifully, with no issues and has never let me down. There was some mild polishing of the ports done to the head and there is a dyno sheet in the file showing a power output of 151.8bhp which makes this car very nippy. The car has a Trackslag stainless steel exhaust system that makes a lovely note but is not at all ‘droney’ at high speeds.
The gear change is tight with all bushes and linkages replaced by myself when I purchased the car. The gearbox has the slightest hint of crunch on second gear when cold – but that’s pretty typical from these boxes and has never caused issue or got worse during my ownership.
Most of the running gear is also new, with a full suspension replacement recently being carried out. This included new, OEM spec shocks and bushes all round, combined with Eibach lowering springs. This combination gives a fantastic driving experience – not at all crashy on bumpy roads, but nice and tight on twisty B-roads. Every nut, bolt and washer was replaced with new, along with new wishbones, bushes, ball joints and track rod ends.
Finally, the original BBS RA alloys are present in good condition along with Toyo Proxy tyres all round with good tread. This car drives extremely well as a result of all of the above work.
Interior
The interior is in great condition for the mileage of the car. The driver’s, upper seat bolster has some wear to the cloth but is not holed. The lower driver’s bolster has a small section of foam missing from under the cloth but in a place that you don’t notice visually or when sat in the seat.
All carpet, seats and trim are in good condition and the parcel shelf is good too, with no speaker holes. The headlining is nice and tight, having been re-trimmed by the previous owner. There is also a set of VW black carpet mats that were recently purchased and the boot contains the spare wheel, jack, tool kit, warning triangle and first aid kit.
Everything works on the car, including the MFA. I have fitted the car with a Pure DAB radio which includes AUX and USB inputs, Bluetooth and hands-free phone connection. Under the passenger seat is an Edge 4-channel amplifier, connected to In-Phase component speakers in the doors and dash top pods. This makes for a good sound quality without affecting the original look of the car.
Other upgrades include a new, upgraded headlamp loom kit so the lights are nice and bright and a weighted shift-rod that improves the feel of the gear change.
Finally, the car has remote central locking with a Cobra Cat 1 alarm/immobiliser. Two keys and two fobs are present.
Summary
It’s impossible to list everything that has been done to the car, but I can only summarise by saying that this is a thoroughly sorted MK2 Golf GTI 16v that wants for nothing now. I am only selling this car to raise funds to put in to my new business venture. Originally this was planned as a long-term keeper and I have enjoyed using it on and off over the last 12 months for daily driving duties.
Any inspection is welcome, please don’t hesitate to contact me for further information and many more photos can be found here on my business web site - www.yesterdayscars.co.uk/available-cars/mk2-golf-gti-16v/
