Basically, I have this sat on my drive, it has no tax or MOT: Now, the only thing left to do to make it MOTable is new front discs, pads and brake fluid. Changing brakes is something I'm not confident doing myself, but as I don't have a trailer it would be pretty awkward getting it to a garage. Therefore, I'm interested in the idea of these mobile mechanic sorts who can pop round and sort it for you. As it is, even if I risked breaking the law (which I won't) to get it to a garage, the brakes are pretty much dead so it would be very dangerous! Has anyone any experience of them or has any other ideas? Ta!

I'm in Leeds and might be able to give you a hand some time, it just depends when it needs doing edit: when i say give you a hand, I mean hang about telling you what you need to do, so that you know how to do it next time

I've watched people changing brakes before, I'm just not hugely confident doing it myself and with it being something like brakes I want to be 100% I'm doing it right. Having someone else about to show me what to do would help greatly! You would of course be rewarded for your efforts.

Been there, felt like that. Brakes are brakes. It's no different to changing anything else, and they're suprisingly simple. However I do understand your concern. I'm no mechanic, but I've changed brake parts on several cars before Oh and I've also experienced taking a van to a reputable garage to have brake work done, only for the van to come back to the owner with nearly no brakes! Needless to say, we've not been back yet

Can you not just get the MOT station to do it then test it? That way you can drive it legally to a pre-booked MOT and get it done there. Or are the brakes totally fugged?

Brakes are suprisingly easy, changing fluid can be a pain in the , but discs and pads should be ok. If you were closer I'd pop round and help you for some tea-based goodness

Yeah you know when you've got brakes 'right'.... if you start spooning it up then you'll realise right away, but if you just remember how stuff comes apart and get it back in the right order it'll just feel right and you'll be happy.
Basically, as long as the wheel spins freely afterwards, and you don't lose any fluid or get grasy fingerprints on the disc or pad, there's not a lot can go wrong! They're actually a really simple system. Bleeding is a bit of hassle but you probably won't need to do that.

I was a bit worried about changing the discs/pads on my micra, I got stuck in and was surprised how easy it was. I got a neighbor who restores land rovers to check it was all ok after. As others have said give it a go ;D

They're dead, they've barely been used for something like 2-3 years and were in need of replacement at that time I understand. You can slam your foot to the floor and barely notice them working. There's a lot of traffic around here, so it really isn't worth the risk driving to my nearest friendly garage - would make it considerably easier though! I'll get reading up on how to do it myself, any tips from the experienced lot here? Doesn't look THAT hard providing everything goes right.....

From what yo uhave said it sounds as though the callipers are sticking so that either means sticking pistons or slides, they would both need freeing off when the discs/pads were done.
