MODEL HISTORY
Five hundred extra special examples of the 150 mph Ford Sierra RS Cosworth went on sale in Britain on August 1st 1987. This more powerful ‘evolution’ model was introduced to allow Ford to develop the original limited production run of 5,000 needed to allow the car to be homologated for International Touring Car Racing in Group A. Aston Martin at Tickford were assigned with converting the 500 cars and in addition to the more powerful 224 bhp engine, (with the potential to exceed 400 bhp in race trim), numerous aerodynamic features were incorporated in the bodywork. These include a 30mm lip spoiler applied directly to the rear edge of the tailgate to increase rear downforce. New and larger cooling ducts were included in the design of the front bumper for the intercooler and the front brakes, as well as an aerodynamic splitter. The vehicle was only available through 90 specialist Ford RS (Rally-Sport) dealers in Britain at a cost of £19,950. (Source Ford News Release 87/76).
EQUIPMENT
Bodyside mouldings, integral front air dam, colour coded door mirrors, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, colour coded lockable fuel filler cap, bonnet cooling vents, halogen headlamps, colour coded bumpers, single plane rear wing spoiler with trailing edge fence, lower tailgate mounted spoiler, tinted glass all round, tailgate wash/wipe, laminated windscreen, central locking, extended centre console, cigar lighter, quartz digital clock, fascia light dimmer, leather gearknob, leather three spoke sports steering wheel, 3-speed heater fan , cassette storage, electronic sound system (model ECU2) with power amplifier, electric aerial, Recaro Sports front seats, split folding rear seats, tilt and slide sunroof, tachometer with turbo boost gauge, trip recorder, anti-locking brake system with failure warning light, electric front windows.
EXTERIOR
The commanding exterior of this RS Cosworth is breath-taking and nothing short of simply magnificent. Finished in rarest trio of colours, Moonstone Blue, the paintwork boasts a deep gloss shine. All exterior trim, glass and lights remain free from damage as does the vulnerable front splitter. The unique silver coachline and RS500 badges applied to the front wings and tailgate are still present. The engine bay is incredible having been professionally detailed and boasts all the correct engine and chassis identification numbers and stickers. The drivers door mirror has markings and the front screen has been replaced sporting a blue tint band at the top. The underside is clean but not detailed. Spectacular and worthy of a collection.
INTERIOR
The interior of this RS500 is simply beautiful. Finished in Ford Roma Grey (code S2), the Recaro seats and carpeted door trim are in remarkable condition with no wear or discolouration and completely commensurate with a very low mileage example. The driver’s seat bolster still has a soft velvet feel and the carpets are spotless having been protected by carpet mats. The interior equipment and trim is original although a flashing blue alarm LED has been fitted. All dials and gauges operate perfectly and show healthy readings and the dashboard has four hairline stress cracks. The first aid kit is still in its protective film. The boot is clean with minimal carpet wear. A fantastic 1980’s interior, the embodiment of driving pleasure and excitement.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The Cosworth YBD-Series 2.0 litre, 16 valve twin overhead camshaft, four cylinder, fuel injected, turbocharged and intercooled engine which in road use is tuned to develop 224 bhp. Discreet reliability improvements include an upgraded ECU, coil pack and grey injectors. Meticulously detailed by respected RS Specialists, North Yorks RS Spares, under bonnet wow factor is guaranteed. Features over a regular Cosworth include a Garrett T31/T04 turbocharger, twin fuel injectors for each cylinder, pressurised oil cooling for each of the engine’s pistons and a larger capacity oil and water pump. Expect 0-60 in 6.2 seconds and a top speed of 153mph. The gear changes are crisp and tight.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Correct and undamaged factory fitted 15 X 7 inch aluminium alloy (ATS) wheels are shod in Yokohama 205/50 R15 tyres. The spare is in used condition. Four wheel disc brakes with ABS and a hydraulic booster stop the car with confidence.
