With a heavy heart it looks like we need to sell our Type 3 project, this car has been in my family since the early 90’s, it had a running problem when bought, was parked up outside and never fixed… I have always intended to restore it, but we are losing the property its stored on and may not have space to keep it, plus we do have too many projects.
And please no replies of 'thats scrap mate' etc etc, worse splitties get restored.
So the car:
• 1972 VW Type 3 1600E Fastback, white with a black interior, registered 26 May 1972
• Off the road since the early nineties, stored outside 99% of that time so very extremely rusty.
• It’s the injected one rather than carbed
• Original radio
• Registration may be of value to a ‘Herbie’ owner being ‘LVB’
• It wasn't high mileage when taken off the road
• What is there is original, although most of the metal needs replacing!
Bodywork: Rot pretty much everywhere but:
• The tailgate is solid, just with surface rust
• The roof panel seems solid
• The doors, bonnet and wings are shot. We have decent original used rear wings, doors and a bonnet to go with the car
• The rear inner wings need a lot of repair, the drivers side has been creased from an accident years ago.
• The engine has actually dropped where an engine mount has rotted out, so is held up with a piece of timber and a strap
• The floors do have small holes, but I have been in and stamped my feet around and the floor hasn’t moved, it is orange with surface rust though
• The battery tray has gone extending into the floor
• The sills/air ducting of coarse needs replacement
The front end is the worst:
• The front wings pretty much fell off because they were so rusty
• The front panels have all fallen off, basically ahead of the beam there is nothing now
• The inner wings have huge holes
• The bulkhead has a massive hole revealing the heater
• So basically ahead of the windscreen there’s not much that can be saved, it will need panels off a breaker grafting on
However the door gaps are fine and the wheels haven’t shifted the wrong way in the arches, we have moved this car around on its wheels to get other cars out. So its not about to collapse In a heap. Its been pulled up the drive by a rope on the front beam with no issues.
It comes with a stash of spares, this is:
• Two original used rear wings
• Three original used doors
• One really great condition original used bonnet (loft stored since the 90’s)
• Front seat base, cushion and cover.
• Steering column
• Two windscreens
• Front and rear bumpers in need of rechroming
• Wiring loom
• Lots of lights, and bits of trim
• Second set of steel wheels
• Hubcaps
• And numerous other odds and sods
Basically my dad went through a type 3 obsessed stage in the early 90’s and ended up breaking a few resulting in the above! There is a variant tailgate and glass plus early rusty bumpers that can go with this.
I know this really is a basket case, these are very cool rare cars now though, the body unbolts from the floorpan and the floorpan is an extended beetle one. It can be done.
The black on the bodywork in the pics is a rust converter, painted on last year to atleast try and stop it getting any worse...
Price: My dad wants £500 due to the parts it still has on it, and the parts it comes with. Offers welcome, we're looking for someone to restore it.
