So, I bought this 101 off eBay a few weeks ago with no MOT after a beer or two.I genuinely didn`t know too much about them, but it looked great, and sounded like a decent example. It is! It needed the brakes finishing off after the previous owner started a servo conversion, but didn`t finish it. After this, it went for an MOT and just needed a new steering damper to get a test. Not bad at all for a Land Rover which hasn`t been on the road for 10 years! It`s 100% totally solid, with no rust to the underside at all. The engine is superb! It`s the original 3.5 V8 twin carb the 101`s all start life with, and it`s covered just 75,000 kms from new. The previous owner advised it had had a full rebuild at some point. There`s no evidence of this, but it`s genuinely the sweetest land Rover V8 I`ve ever heard. It sounds fantastic, and gives off a real throaty growl from the exhaust. It`s a very addictive sound. Don`t ask about MPG. Lets just say it`s not great!
It was decommissioned from the military in 2000, and bought by John Craddock Land Rover. It was used as an ambulance in the forces, and has been raped of all it`s original stretchers, oxygen bottles etc at some point. I`ve managed to source quite a few accessories in the last few week, some of which are quite rare. These include a couple of military stretchers, starter handle, Wolf jack and handle, pick axe shaft and head, fire extinguisher and shovel. I`ve also got new straps to fasten these to the front, but haven`t done this yet as I was going to wait until I had decided to paint it or not. More on that.........
When I first got this, I didn`t know what to do with it. I had grand ideas of an overland camper conversion, rubbing it down and painting it NATO green with the correct red crosses etc, or just leaving it as is. Since it`s MOT`d, I`ve done a few miles in it, and am starting to get really attached to it. I actually love the way it is now. The paintwork is clearly hand painted, but if you can`t get away with this kind of thing with any car, it`s a landy. In fact, I think they`d look a bit odd with a pristine paint job. It looks like it`s had a about 10 costs of paint. Olive green was the original colour by the looks of things, and over the years it`s had a coat or few of black, camo, white, green and camo again. So, I`ve decided to advertise it as is for the next few weeks, when I`m too busy to start rubbing it down ready for paint. If it sells, all is good. If not then it`ll be painted NATO green, and put back to as close to original as I can get. I`d rather it goes as is, because I`m afraid i`ll keep it myself if I have it around for too much longer. This happens all too often with cars I buy.
So, what does it need? Nothing really. It`s MOT`d and drives very well indeed with no issues. If you wanted to improve it, you could spend a few hours cleaning the grime from the cab. The windscreen is delaminating a little around the edges, and inside the door tops is going a bit crusty. The door tops can be bought for £40 each though, so not a great expense. Apart from this, it would be just putting your own touch on it. Leave the paint as is, or play with it in your spare time.
Make no mistake though, this truck gets LOTS of attention. Kids wave at you as you drive past, the postman will linger outside the house until you appear to have a chat, it will often take you 10-15 minutes to put fuel in (and this is quite a regular chore!!) as people will want to talk to you. It has immense road presence though. People will let you out of junctions, wait for you to pass etc.
I think I`ve covered most things here, so let the photos do the rest of the talking. It`s advertised elsewhere for £5795, so there`s a little bit of RR discount applied here. Any questions, fire away.
