Wifes 54 plate 1.6HDi Citroen Picasso in for a service today (25k) – main dealer due to still under warranty – as if the service cost (£181.00) wasn’t bad enough they’ve just been on the phone – apparently it needs new wiper blades and 3 bulbs replacing, brakes need a good clean and the Turbo heat shield is broken – they want an extra £326 to do this and are trying to say that the heatshield is a wear and tear item and isn’t under warranty! Really? – they’ve now gone off with a flea in their ear to see if I can get the heatshield under warranty and said that bulbs/brakes would only be an extra £220! I could rebuild my whole Feckin car for that amount. So told them to get stuffed on the bulbs/brakes. Good old rip off main dealers. She still doesn’t get why I prefer older cars!!!!

Once took our Mini to a Rover main dealer for a MOT - long stiry why - but never mind. They wanted £400 to fit two tyres, wiper blades and a 3" x 3" patch on the sill. They missed the fact that the front subframe mounts were gone, that when they had done the suspension work they forgot to bolt the rear subframe back in and one trailing arm was so worn it was about flopping off, and the handbrake wasn't holding/locking on. Right death trap that was.
I got the work it really needed to have done by a competant garage and a pass at another test centre and it cost less than £200 and a phonecall to VOSA about the first place...

Where F-in-L works attracts a lot of cars that come for first service after main dealer - he takes as read that the second job after removing the wheels will be cleaning un-seizing the brakes...
When he (briefly!) worked at a Ford main dealer, he refused to do a service where checking of the brakes involved just looking at them without even removing the wheels. He soon quit to go to a decent family owned independant, virtually just on grounds of professional pride in his job!

picassos been a good car for us (her) - still faily low mileage (25k)and no probs until now. i've just checked prices on web - i can replace all four discs and all pads for less than what they're quoting to give them a good clean! - i still cant convice her that older is best - currently got a cinq sporting 23k 1 owner FSH £700 - had it a year and its cost me £12 for a clutch cable! - last motor was a volvo 940 estate - paid £300 for it, had it 18months and sold for £700 with 180k on the clock - only cost was £40 for new pads all round! - she always has a moan when i spend some time in't garage but still cant see that mine don't cost £500 for a service and replacing a few bits and bobs!

S'funny that, as a 16 year old apprentice mechanic, I started at a Ford main dealer. Servicing was a joke, the wheels never came off, all checked through the rim or backplate. WD40 was your best friend, a quick spray on the air filter housing, and rocker cover and a wipe over. Customers were always charged for 5 litres of oil, most only took 4 litres. Every 5th service you got to sneek a can of oil home under your coat. I stuck it 3 months, complained to the aprentice governing body, and went to a small family run garage. Learnt to do the job properly there and take a pride in your work.

warranty is up in july so just gonna do brakes myself-it sticks in my throat to pay these tossers for a job that i can do better myself and then have confidence that the jobs been done right. Just got to suss out a price for the turbo heatshield. i'd love to see a breakdown to see how much they charge for replacing a bulb.

An old volvo I had last year had £5000 worth of service history dating from 2000 to 2005. The presvious owner had had EVERYTHING done at the main dealer, MOTs tyres, everything! Anything that was suggested that needed doing was done. The best receipt for work I found was £38 for a brake bulb. The bulb itself cost 80p, the rest was labour! The previous owner part exchanged the old 940 estate against a used V70 at said dealer. I bought it directly from the dealer for £200. Still don't know why I ever sold it. It was a fanstastic car, obviously with all that history it drove perfectly. I'm so glad other people spend fortunes on cars so I can snap them up dirt cheap

This has never affected me because every car I have owned is old enough that anyone selling them is now dead. And rightly so I say, if I find their graves I'll dance on them

the 940 estate i had also had FMDSH - i admit i regret selling - but the way i look at it - the Cinq in reality only cost me £300 as the rest was volvo profit. i've got all paperwork for the cinq including the original bill of sale- a Fiat dealer near me had a cinq sporting a year older with 66k on it on the forecourt for £1799 - i just couldnt resist going in an telling the salesman what i paid for mine - his face was priceless!! made my day!!

I think main dealers make more money than drug dealers, rip off merchants every one in my experience.

I've having Volvo-related issues at the moment and in the midst of some dignosing electric stuff I disconnected the radio for about 5 seconds. I've checked through the handbook etc. for the code, but to no avail. I thought I'd give the main dealer (where the car was bought from, about 5 owners/170,000miles/£25,000 ago!) who told me that there was a £10+ VAT charge and I had to go in person. I get the 'in person' bit, because I could be a thief, but what is the £10 for? He'd already confirmed he knew the code after I gave him my reg. number!

I hate main dealers.
Does anyone know more about the legislation that came out last year saying you don't have to take a car to the main dealer for the warranty to be valid?
Brakes on the C4 have started honking and shuddering. Dealership told me the pads were gone and needed replacing.
I asked them why a 19,000 mile car needed new pads and discs and whether or not PSA were making the pads out of poo.
The best dealership run in I had was when I had to take my 306 into have the airbag warning light reset (it was a main agent job, take it or leave it, nowhere else would touch it 'because it might explode').
So I gave them my hundred pounds and got a very amusing advisory sheet when the car was given back to me, added up to well over £1000. I wondered why they were taking the wheels off.
Best ones included a 'bent' plastic droplink which they wouldn't show me ('customers aren't insured in the workshop'), a 'snapped' subframe and a 'completely inoperative' instument panel (the alternator tacho connection was loose, that was why the rev counter didn't work).
What annoys me is that had it been my mum she would have been scared shitless and paid for them to 'sort it all out'.
They missed the fact that one of the wheel bearings was smashed to fook (I knew that, it just amused me that they didn't spot it while they were writing their great works of fiction).
The place? Abbey Peugeot in Sale.
My local independent garage took a photocopy of the sheet and framed it as 'the biggest load of curse word I've ever seen in thirty years' and then passed another copy on to trading standards, and my mate angus rang the garage up and called the service manager a prick (as did I).
Avoid.

I hate main dealers. Does anyone know more about the legislation that came out last year saying you don't have to take a car to the main dealer for the warranty to be valid? My father in Law bought a Kia somingorother last year main reason being they have a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty and as he is a volunteer ambulance car driver he does around 50,000 mile per year so its ideal for him. For his warranty to be valid he can get the work done at any Vat registered garage but he has to use genuine Kia service parts. The parts are expensive but the labour charges more than make up for it. Rmad what type of stereo is it, if you have the serial number for it I might be able to get it for you.

Brakes need a clean? What were they going to do, take off the linings give them a shampoo, Tcut, polish and then refit them? Every full service I do I always remove all the wheels to check the brakes properly, and in the case of drum brakes I clean out the dust, peel back the cylinder dust seals to check for leakage. I also always ensure the cylinders and handbrake linkage are free moving. Then I set the shoe adjusters as the automatic ones rarely work. All part of the service. I've lost count of the number of cars I've serviced that were previously maintained by dealers where I've had to use a club hammer and a block of wood to remove wheels that have corroded to the hubs...simply because no-one had EVER removed them as part of maintenance.
One thing that always annoys me is those garages that adjust the hanbrake cables before ensuring the shoes are correctly adjusted. You end up with a reasonable handbrake and a poor footbrake.
I could rant all day about garages that hammer the wheel nuts/bolts back on with air guns.
How many garages check the gearbox oil? Not many from what I've seen!
I run a small workshop and I insist that servicing is done properly. We may not be the cheapest, but it's done properly. You just know that those garages that offer a full service for £60 or whatever can't afford to do the job properly, yet so many people believe they are getting a good deal when in fact they aren't!
Sorry to rant....I get really annoyed at seeing peoples cars bodged up by garages that give the motor trade such a curse word reputation and make my job more difficult!

I agree about main stealerships. as a mechanic, i find a real sense of fullfilment by doing a proper job and not ripping the customer off. current bmw dealer labour charge? £119+vat per hour. minimum charge? 1 hour of course. that means the dealership earns my average yearly wage in about 2 weeks at least the parts mostly fit better.
