Today is all the nope. Raining sideways, blowing a gale and I tried to do one thing and made it worse so... NOPE. New radiator arrived.
I still want to sack it off. I'm totally fed up with it, nearly called someone to come and take it away and I'm still considering that route. I've had enough with my incompetence and this engine.

Having had exactly the same pain years ago with a 1725 Holbay rebuild, I echo the above. Good luck tomorrow! Mind, being towed down the road with no bonnet on by the old feller's Volvo, spitting flames out of a gauze filter was quite spectacular. Just not very effective. My parallel story was a bonnetless mis-timed Cortina Mk 1 estate being towed by a Mini van.

This won't beat you, leave it until the weather's not so rubbish and you're ready to have a go again. You can do this.

Walk away from it for a 'bit' and come back to it when your mojo is back - you have come too far to walkaway from it forever?

I have just lost my temper with it today, typical really that when I was in the mood to actually crack on and try and sort it that we'd get another storm with a name (Doris, this time) come along and get in the way. The weather is pretty horrendous outside now so I'd've been forced to down tools even if I hadn't got really cross with it.
I regret asking for advice really too. As helpful as some people have been, I just end up more confused than ever and question everything I do, overthink stuff. Then when it doesn't work it feels like it's entirely my fault for being stupid. Which in itself is pretty stupid. Trying to get this car running and failing has actually really put me off getting any more projects in the future and really shaken my confidence about tackling the ones I do have at the moment.
However, Mike went over the good stuff I've done to balance it out. So while I haven't been able to get the engine going, and have been criticised for it, I have managed to repair the roof, make a new headlining, fit a clutch, fit piston rings, fit new brakes on the front, replace all four ball joints, find a correct headlight, fit new door seals, almost get it watertight, get all the lights working and get to the bottom of why the engine was locked up when I got it. So there's an awful lot of work I've done over the last few years and while getting the engine running is usually the most important thing on a project I've not exactly sat idle while I've not been able to do that.
On balance, I'm not really a dumdum, it's just easy to forget how far I have come with this car and how much work I've done properly. When the weather has cleared up we'll have another go I suppose, because there's not a lot of money in scrap right now and a non-running obscure French car is going to be a tough sell.

At least in this crowd you're not likely to get shamed or anything. Support on here is great. But I absolutely get what you are saying!
A small side note... think of it like this: we all had to learn and at least you are trying to learn! Most others would either not start the endeavour or would quickly hand it over and learn nothing but how to draw a wallet...
So you have my R E S P E C T for the effort you put in to your project(s)!

No car advice to offer but you're not the only person Doris (?) has upset today. There's a lot more expensive and fancy stuff on here, but this is the Readers' Ride thread I always look for first. I've no desire to own any of the cars that you have, which is a personal preference, but I really enjoy reading about them, your approach and what you do. I can see I'm not the only who wants to see you push them even further along than you have.
You will get it to run, maybe not today, but you will get it to run.

No one has criticised you? ? All advice as far as I have read (and I read your posts first as you are an entertaining writer) is good advice. We all screw up - when I built my Pop engine I timed it 180 degrees out too and I've built loads of engines in my time. Took me a whole evening to sort it out to get it running. Timing is relatively easy but you HAVE to be methodical and get each stage correct or the next stage gets screwed. Glenanderson's advice on the previous page is 100% correct, take your time and check each stage and eventually it will run. You can then have the pride of building your own engine. Maybe leave it till Mike can go through it with you to watch and confirm you have done each stage correctly? Chin up, it's all part of life's rich tapestry. PS, Your comment in sticking to 4 cylinders because of timing - you only ever have to time 1 cylinder, all the rest follow quite happily like good little pistons

my advice is that if you are confused by conflicting advice, don't use that advice.
theres 5 or 6 posts on here saying roughly same thing in a roundabouts way. when the advice starts being the same from different sources, thats your repeatability, and the one to go for.

Angyl, you're beating yourself up on this which is getting you down. We can all feel this in the tone of your recent posts. Give yourself a few days away from this and come back when the weather is kinder and you have renewed enthusiasm. You CAN get this Renault to purr, everyone on here is rooting for you and I have only seen sensible and helpful advice being given. I'm with BPR, wait 'til you can look at this with Mike. Until such time, take a break, have a KitKat!

Yup... So here's the score as of now.
I've ordered a new matching NOS set of correct points, condensor, distributor cap and rotor arm for £15 delivered. It's significantly cheaper than electronic ignition and I don't want to go the electronic ignition route yet, if at all. I've found old unused ignition kit is fine, it seems to be stuff that was made in the last 10 years or so that's of variable quality.
I'm going to leave the engine completely alone until those parts have arrived and Mike has time to go through each step with me and be a fresh pair of critical eyes.
The new radiator that arrived earlier today will be fitted. It needs some slight modification because it's for an early Renault 5, nothing too involved and it's of a similar size to the original Renault 6 radiator fitted and a seemingly common modification in Spain. Seems a sensible route to have taken.
There is a slim chance the timing chain is incorrectly fitted, therefore I won't be doing anything with the lights wiring, the CV boots or the front calipers as all of those things need to be disturbed should I need to remove the engine. The radiator doesn't need to be removed separately if I have to take the engine out so that can safely be fitted as it comes off with the grille and bonnet.
I may drop the fuel tank to clean it out, reseal it and fit the new sender so that I don't have to constantly rig up a remote fuel source. I may not.
Finally, in non-Renault news, I have booked a chap to come out and pump up the Princess tomorrow afternoon which eliminates the one job on that car that's been holding everything up. £30 for the call-out and pump up seems reasonable to me and I already have the fluid. Here's hoping the suspension system doesn't burst again.

Focus on the Princess for a while, and whilst doing that, remember I imagine 50% of us on here, at least, will have played the distributor hokey-cokey at at least once in our lives (and don't ask about the firing order my Escort ran for 3yrs).

I'm a bit late, I thought I'd posted something earlier but obviously didn't. Anything is easy once you can do it, and most of the people on here trying to help, will be older and have been there before. I think everyone I rooting for you (I certainly am) and I can remember feeling just like you seem to feel now! When it does run you'll be the happiest person on here Walk away and come back to it when you feel like it, after all it doesn't eat... so nothing will change in your absence. You'll get there in the end, break it down into small bites and someone here will help you all the way through!! Or fill it with beer and tow it to the gathering and see how quickly it runs (And I drove to the south of France on a Suzuki GS550 with the timing 2 teeth out!! Maybe you should start a new thread, a place we can come out with our stupid )

An observation, if I may - you do post the same updates on quite a few forums - now there's nowt wrong with that - but it's therefore no surprise to hear that you're on the receiving end of a flood of advice coming at you from each and every one of these channels. As xbo11ox said on autoshite, you're 99% there so chin up / leave it for a bit / don't post until you're feeling better.
