Courage got, information acquired I made it my business to get to the unit and get on with this repair. First job was to tidy up the old work. The inner sill repair is quite secure, but could do with another bit of good weld laying to tidy it up. The floor patch, on the other hand, wasn't good enough so I removed it which took rather more effort than I'd expected. The problem with the welder I was facing before was an irregular gas supply, after some information from a professional welder friend I finally understood how things should be set up, especially the previously absent flow regulator. Now I have lovely predictable welds.  I decided to start again with the floor patch and cut out considerably more metal than I had before to try and get rid of the thinner areas I was having issues with. This got rather out of hand. Before I show you how big the patch has got here's a picture that, I believe, demonstrates some decent weld penetration. Certainly the new patch feels and behaves much more securely on the edge that is tacked in.  Here is the new patch. It has doubled in size which is not terribly satisfying, but at least I should have eliminated the rot from this area as a result. It was also considerably easier to make as I've not fannied about with putting the ribs and shapes in this time around.  So it's progress, that's something, but it's not as much as I wanted to achieve. I had a bizarrely short temper today so this was not a good job to be tackling with that mindset. |

I have a new member to my little family that I'm collecting on Friday from that there London.   Not my usual fare at all, in fact I've been known to say disparaging things about the Corsa in the past, but this one is the right car at the right time, I'd be daft not to go for it. Already sourced some better wheel trims and when I get it home I'll give it a go over nose-to-tail to find out what else it needs. Doesn't look at all bad for a twenty year old Vauxhall. |

I was never a fan of the b's, but had one a couple of years ago when needs where a must and turned out to be a great little car cheap to run and fix.

 I'll make a full and proper post on my blog and link back here to it. Short version is that I made it back the 263 miles with one stop for a wee and while I got blown all over the motorway I got back with 10 minutes of my 'day insurance' remaining. All that on just £20 of petrol! I wasn't hanging about either, so I suspect even better mpg could have been gained if I'd done a grandad run. First impressions are that it's a basic little hatchback with all the attendant lack of refinement you'd expect. The seats are quite good, the engine willing, the gearbox natty and overall it's a very willing and dependable little donkey of a car. Certainly has the potential to be exciting with a few tweaks here and there to things like suspension and a bit more power wouldn't go amiss but overall it's a very good little hatchback and doesn't feel like it's done 111k. Later today I'm off to inspect it properly and get a feel for what bits of trim it needs, and what consumables need looking at. The brakes definitely need looking at to find out if they're in need of a fettle or if I'm just over-used to Citroen brakes. I have called it Nugget.  |

Those Corsa's are really rather quite good...
With just a small amount of tweakage you can get these looking pretty darn smart!

99% of Corsa's haven't used the correct oil throughout their life and not doing so renders the timing chain tensioner to stop working. If when ticking over, you can hear it, change to correct oil and clean out tensioner and you might save yourself the £600 to replace chain and all its components. If it's already had one, be sure to use the correct oil and you'll see 200k easy

If it's already had one, be sure to use the correct oil and you'll see 200k easy The chain is £40  I imagine at this age this might have the SOHC engine in not the dreaded Z12 DOHC.. |

That will be belt driven if it snaps put a new one no drama, they have a sohc non interference engine.

This one's a 1994, I'm pretty sure it's had a cambelt change at 94k because it has 94000 written on the cambelt cover. First, here's a fleet update for those that might be getting a bit lost.  |

my crystal ball says C12NZ - 1.2 sohc, single point injection, 45hp, has a timing belt for what its worth. tough as old boots but in my experience not as frugal as the engine capacity suggests, you spend most of your time with your foot on the floor trying to keep up with traffic |
