Ive been working on an XR4I this weekend that my dad owns, Its a runner, He uses it everyday, But in the few years he's owned it Its always been lumpy at idle, and slightly missing under load. We've been thru everything at least twice, Faultfinding on the kjet, timing, gastested it, new ignition components, new headgaskets, valve clearances... We have sort of reached the conclusion that the engine is buggered. Possibly worn cam ? Ive been thinking about possibly convertion to a zetec ? This would be lighter provide more power ,more economic and be deadly reliable. BUT. Am i right in thinking that fueling them is a problem? Id like to buy an zetec mondeo and swap the motor in, but idealy id like to use the ecu and fueling also to keep it semi factory and not break the bank. Is that even possible? ive read up on mounting the engine up and what clutch and release bearing to use etc... Its just ignition and fuel thats got me stumped atm. Any ideas guys ? All info apprieciated

With a Zetec you will loose a bit in torque and power is only the same if you go for throttle bodies.
You could also upgrade to the 24V BOA/BOB Cosworth, that certainly has more power. An other option could be to source a 4.0 V6 from a Ford USA product (Explorer, Ranger and Mustang) and drop that in.
Mind that a small block Ford v8 is an factory upgrade (Xr8), well almost.

Bookmarked I've been browsing around to see if a Zetec can be a plug-and-play conversion, happy to share any info I have I had the same idea as you but most folk use aftermarket fuel & ingnition so info about keeping it standard is scarce. It looks like the later (Blacktop) motors are a pain as they have a built-in immobiliser, alarm, etc. Avoid these. Either of the earlier (Silvertop) sound best, I found a guide that listed the 3 (only 3 wires you need to connect to get it running, it sounds like engine harness is almost stand-alone Beware that *any* changes (the exhaust system was mentioned) may confuse the ECU. Zetec on Zetec management is easy enough. Find an early mondeo ECU with EEC-IV and no pats, or failing that use a pats one and cable tie the key to the sensor ring to make it work. The whole engine harness is separate from the rest of the loom, it's a doddle to transplant. Having said that, in a 4i I'd be looking at a V6 too. Zetec won't fit the existing gearbox and you have to make mounts and replumb all the waterways where a 2.9 (either 12 or 24v) will slot straight in and just need wiring, exhausts and fuel supply adapting. You can even reuse the starter, flywheel and clutch from the 2.8. In fact, if you are interested in a low miles 2.9 12v with everything necessary to transplant feel free to PM me about it. I'm sick of tripping over it and will probably ebay it quite soon. PS - try a new fuel pump and filter on the 2.8 before you condemn it Usually when these engines are worn out they smoke and burn a lot of oil while still seeming to "go" where a dying fuel pump will make it run badly.

Oh thats interesting you say that ! I actually remember now when he bought it that i had to fiddle with some fuelpump plumbing to get it running again.
The day he viewed the car it was running (but lumpy), the day we collected it it ran as far as the low loader to get it home, and then gave up upon unloading it. I fiddled around and got it running again, serviced , mot'd etc but its allways been lumpy. ive reccomended the idea of a pump and filter so i think we will try that. Does that sound right considering it revs and drives fine, pulls well etc?

K-jet cars are very, very fussy about fuel pressure, all sorts of idle and flat spot troubles can occur.

I shall take that advice and give it a go thanks . I actually spoke to him last night regarding the pump, and he says he actually has a spare one in the garage as he bought an entire kjet set up from a kitcar as we couldnt find a adjustment bolt for the metering head anywhere, and the one in the car was badly threaded from the factory so wouldnt adjust..... Might just put that pump on it and give it a go... Although knowing my luck it'll be low on pressure too, Any idea what sort of pressure it should be running at out of the pump to the metering head? Ive got a pressure guage so if i can find a place to plumb that in , i could find out... ?
