I'm not too clued up on rust protection solutions so any tips would be appreciated! The thing that's important on a door is to remember that no matter how good the rubbers are that seal the drop glass and the quarterlight, water will get in. You want to stop it getting in to the interior (seal a plastic membrane to the door with double sided tape) and to make sure it can get out by keeping the drain holes at the bottom of the frame clear. (Check the've not been lost when the bottom of the frame and the door has been repaired.) The rustproofing need to focus on two things - firstly the seams around the side and edge of the door. I use a Dinitrol product which has good creep properties - It comes in an aerosol with a long tip on the spray head - keep it warm (it flows better when warm) and from the inside of the door, spray the fluid around the edge and it will creep into the seams and will keep water out. Be careful though - if the seams have not been properly sealed with brush able seam sealer by the guy who did the welding, the fluid will come through the seam to the outer edge of the door, which makes painting a bit tricky. For that reason, I'd tend not to do the rustproofing until the door frame is painted to avoid contamination. Once the seams have been dealt with, I'd use Waxoyly or Bilt Hamber Dynax S-80 (from memory) on the inside of the door skin. It's a wax coating that stays semi soft (it skins over) and causes the water to just run off the surface). Make sure you keep the drain holes clear. To keep the outside of the door rust free, make sure clean bare metal is etch primed before any other paint is applied. Get a gloss coat on top of other primer coats before too long - many primers will absorb a bit of moisture if left unpainted for too long.

I like the sound of the Dinitrol, will just need to wait till it's painted. I think the painting will have to be done in one swoop, the weather is going to be curse word for the next few months now so leaving it primered isn't going to go down well!

Well I bought me some copper pipe, a pipe bender and a flaring kit. Never flared a pipe before so a quick browse on the old youtube machine and I think I've got it down to a T now. I suppose I'll just have to wait and see what happens when I apply to the car and apply pressure to the brakes! I can't see them leaking though, the flares finish dead flush with the couplings... Back to the body... My welder's told me I need to get hold of a rear panel to match up the door so we can take it back to original. Now since I've never even seen another one in the flesh I can't even guess how it's supposed to be so now I need to get a template or something from somewhere! Oh the joys...

Any progress on this? I'm missing my Zodiac fix! Things have stood still at the mo... The Welder has the 2nd door and the Waterpump and now he's gone away to donate blood and bone marrow to his sister to help her recover... On another note, the car comes with A STORY!! The GF was rummaging through some paperwork last week and came across a written history of the car stretching back decades (full write up when I'm back home, currently in Derby checking out Matlock) Car was originally black, it's had a Union Jack on the roof and the rear arches are of a special variety ;-) On another'nother note, I've yet another classic rarity in my sights (VX490 on here) so I'm just waiting for a serious buyer to come along for my BMW E46 as I've got no room left lol. Thaaar she blows!!

How's the Zodiac? Any updates? Hi Hi! Yes, couple of updates but nothing major quite yet I'm afraid... My welder friend who's had my passenger door and Waterpump has been quite ill for some time. His sister had leukaemia and he had to donate blood and bone marrow to her. This fixed her right up but had a knock-on effect on him. Thankfully he's come back fighting which surprised me with him being a withered 60 year old man! So he's cracking on re-skinning my doors, then next job he'll be repairing the front wings which I'm quite looking forward too Also, 2 (yes that's TWO) purchases this week and it's only Monday!! Lol. Just waiting on a 3rd purchase now, managed to finally find somebody selling some door cards that have the original chrome strips that I desperately need for the rear cards! I feel like crying, watching eBay like a hawk now! A nice big sun visor and a very VERY juicy set of wheels for her. Pictures to follow once I can get this stOOOpid uploader to work...

As much as I love the slotmags, the staggered centrelines stand a good chance of looking even better. Is that a properly ancient 70s Custom Car sticker in the Cortina window?

The slot mags are great but they tyres are just plain old wrong... And yes that's very ancient custom car stickers on the screen. Luckily when the car was garaged they left the window cracked just a little so it's preserved really well inside. Think I may just ebay it today, not quite rare enough to merit a place in my collection...

I think... I may... I think I may just cry... Finally, I've managed to eBay myself a set of rear door cards complete with chrome strips!!!! I thought I was going to have to resort to the re-pressed stuff that's offered up by all these companies for silly money but now I can do it perfectly original Aaaaaaand breathe... Lol.

Well I wasn't going to post untill I'd made my doorcards or at least had them turn up but after that 5 hour drive at 6:30am today I feel like I deserve to show em off little :-) Really chuffed with how well they fit, wheel nuts all sit in perfectly too which is great news. The guy also had an amazing collection of cars An early 60's Van and the Anglebox that had 28,000 in totally original condition He also had a MKI Lotus Cortina that he's owned since a teenager that looked 95% restored Also had a ye ole model T A (I think?) and many many many 80's yank-looking police motorbikes? Also as Lincoln Capri!

Those wheels look PERFECT, you've even managed to save yourself the hassle of remodelling the rear arches by fitting them.
