I'm looking to get one of these soon, I'm really after a mk1, preferably in gold with brown interior. What is economy like (guessing around 30mpg?). Does anything go wrong with them?

I know of three people who have had the engines blow up. All were low mileage import Pajero's. One had faulty temperature sender so owner didn't know it was overheating when towing and cracked head. Cost of parts to repair alone was more than the vehicle was worth !. Other two were turbo seals failed so the engine "ran away" on the sump oil until they seized despite being switched off by the key. All were women owners who had garage maintain so no DIY bodges. Other than that I've heard nothing but good reports about them. Chassis can rot just as bad as a Land Rover so check carefully. If "repaired" walk away as there will be plenty of others that haven't needed an repairs. My father had Shogun, Land Cruiser and Pathfinder - all brand new. He reckoned the Land Cruiser was the best of the lot.

A mate of mine bought one once, and asked if I'd weld a small patch on the chassis above the rear axle.
I took one glance and told him he didn't have enough money to get me to go near it!

They rust. Lol, my mk2 has had a patch on the chassis and a fair few holes in the body! The mk2s have switchable 4wd which makes them more economical than an equivalent land rover, I don't think the mk1's have this.
The mk1s are very few and far between.

Most of the Pajeros were diesel auto's (i think with overdrive and switchable front hubs - its been a while now) which aren't great on fuel to be honest 20mpg seems a little low, I think i used to get about 24ish with a LWB auto and about 28 on a run same as my 4l diesel Rangie, but its an 80's 4wd what economy were you expecting? Imports never had any underbody protection as standard, the first thing we used to be before registering them was completely plaster them in underseal as they were usually still good when they came in - unfortunately a lot of people never used to bother...

Now I'm a little biased Mine is a 2.5td intercooled 4d56 averages around 28-33mpg pretty much same on urban or motorway only weighing 1700kg helps and it will run on pretty much anything flammable like most proper diesels thank you Robert Bosch just expect smoke when cold if your running the blacker variety, cheers indirect injection reliability wise the engine its self has been great just ticked over 200k I'm just weeding out the inferior parts people have fitted over the years, starters/alternators etc but then these engines don't have the best background but milners 4x4 list everything for these, can buy a complete head for very cheap i do about 180 miles a week just going to work as a background Rust wise mine is stupidly clean, i guess late import and not doing many miles has helped but they do rust like any 80s vehicle so be careful parts wise most good motor-factors stock all parts, as later shoguns/l200s all run the same parts I'm running front/rear mk2 shogun axle/diffs in 5.28 flavor 65mph is about the limit for mine but offroad is where is shows good anyway why do you need any other reason than they are stupidly cool

I had a mark 1 shogun that I bought from my father in law....2.5td long wheelbase manual box...rust free, reliable, brilliantly put together, as others have said between 22 and 35 mpg averaging 28 id say, a long run saw good mileage and towing was the other end of the spectrum. Really enjoyed owning and driving it and was one of the cars ive genuinely missed when I got rid of it.

Now I'm a little biased That's exactly the type I'm looking for, I'm not too keen on the LWB's.

I have had one of these for the past 11 years best car I have ever had its a 2.5 intercooler one its been used to death in the time I've had it for towing never less than 2 ton on the trailer mpg at best with a light foot 30 mpg if you floor it everywhere they will go to single figures trust me they will drink diesel if driven hard but with care they can be quite good on fuel things to be careful of are chassis rust on the rear end just after the trailing arm mountings rust from inside to out can end up paper thin without you seeing a hole, front body mounts rust out, inside inner wings and are a pain to repair inner front wings were they meet the floor pans rust out and cause water leaks inside the cabin, cambelt needs to be done on time they do break but normaly only snap rocker shafts to protect the valves quite a clever idea, they do suffer from worn crankshafts on the front pulleys coming lose normal caused by cambelt changes not tightening bolt up to correct torque, the balance shaft belts quite often break early and pull the cambelt off I've seen 3 of these now do this it doesn't seem to make any difference if you use the belt or not the engine runs just as smooth with no belt fitted other than routine servicing they are fantastic cars tow fantastic and wind the fuel and boost up a bit they are quite nippy the mk2 2.8 TD is as standard far more powerful but they do overheat and crack heads all the time to I bought a mk2 to replace mine as was newer but I sold it because it was so rusty underneath bottom line if you can find a good one take it for a good test drive and as long as its not full of rust should give years of service any questions just ask if I can help I will.

got a lwb shogun mk2 1995 the 3.0 litre v6 petrol driven sensibly 25 mpg nearer 29 on run good all round 4x4 at pocket money prices ticking noise appears its quite normal and caused by some little piston thing that gets clogged up not a great description but apparently a lot of v6 3.0 litres suffer good 7 seater standard as sumpguard transfer box guard and rear petrol tank guard great tow truck / recreational vehicle ive sourced original ralliart sport steering wheel, induction kit meant for an evo parts from japan and in the middle of getting parts together to fit a more efficient freer flowing exhaust use as a daily but think fuel efficiency frightens people of a great 4x4

Looking at buying a Shogun or Pajero in the near future (ie this week). There's this one on ebay: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161575328410 It looks nice, but on enquiring to the seller about chassis rust (the first time I didn't get a reply, until I sent another saying I'm not going to bid unless I get a response), I get this: Are these bad if they have succumbed to rust, I don't want anything other than the mk1 SWB 2.5 It is also, yet again, located in Somerset. Pretty much every car I have bought since 2012 have been in Somerset (or Bristol or Gloucester), and the only other Shogun that interests me is in Somerset (Taunton - where I bought the Justy).

had our lwb 2.5td non intercooler 5 years now,it did 298k of ectremly hard work with us in cluding tow starting articulated trucks, moving mobile homes(8ton)various breakdown work, climbing mountain tracks 3000ft up and a host of other things it should never have done or indeed been asked to, just before xmas it finally broke down with a huge clattering coming from the engine,on stripping it you will see what happened via the links and believe it or not it actualy started the following day albeit on 3 cylinders and with much banging and clattering, vie just made a mongrel engine out of 4d55 and 4d56 bits,so its back on the road now, zero rust body or chassis, brown interior 7 seats the mrs loves it to bits so i have to keep it going! lol links imgur.com/TKwgt2ximgur.com/5N7BOVyimgur.com/7tC08Htimgur.com/oloaJX5

After missing out on three Shogun swb's, I saw this in my saved history, and put a bid on in the last couple of minutes and won it. Groan. I'm converting the loft, so should be good for wood transportation, and pretty much nothing else, lol. Still have eyes for a mk1 Shogun/Pajero though.

Driving about today a little 4x4 caught my eye, looked unusual and as it passed ne going the other way I noticed it had 'Pajero Mini' written across the front of the bonnet.
Anyone know what it was? Grey import?
