any dvla experts on here know about this?
i've found a vehicle I really like, its an import but currently has no reg plate or v5
i'm assured it did have a v5 at the point of its last sale but the current seller thinks it wasnt sent off by the owner, hence not knowing the reg no.
Ive asked for the VIN in the hope I can trace the car ID and set my mind at ease as to it not being nicked and doesnt have to be re registered etc etc
so, question is if I get the VIN info can I plop this into the .gov website or similar and see if it does have a proper reg number?
many thanks

in short, no. I've just been through this with my barracuda, and did find it surprising that there was no way of checking through govt sources whether a VIN was registered as stolen. best I could do was call an Experian vehicle check number and they did a search on the VIN which found nothing, but I still won't know if I can register it until I have it inspected by DVLA. I've just tried to find the (premium rate) number I called, but doesn't look as if it's listed on the site anymore www.autocheck.co.uk/

and bear in mind that if there is no evidence that import duties have been paid, you might end up having to pay them before registering it
would be a bit suspicious of that story as well, even if the last owner didn't send off the V5, the new owner should have had a slip showing transfer of ownership and there would be no reason to remove the number plates with the reg number on either...

According to another thread on here you can get the logbook from the VIN if you apply to the DVLA with just the chassis number on the application from (as long as its registered) Failing that a trade HPI on the vin number will give the reg - if not it comes up as no record found

I'll be a couple of grand out of pocket if I can't get the Cuda registered, but figured that I'd probably get most of it back as I would likely be able to sell the shell for race use only and part out the rest.

tbh the seller is being vague enough to get my spidey senses tingling, I'm pretty sure its almost definitely on the scrapped register and that is why there are no plates/v5.
like you say why the hell would you remove the plates even if the V5 story was true

Don't need to do either but expect to have to have a vic check when you apply for the log book

It may have had a cherished reg transferred off it to another car. If they didn't expect the car to return to the road then they might not have bothered getting new plates made and subsequently when the V5 later gets lost there's no way to know what the reg is. I have a car here that is in that exact position and there's nothing dodgy gone on at all.
