I have no idea what possessed me to do it, but I went and I bought a lada riva estate some of it is black, the engine doesn't run, it's sat for the last 5 years and the service history contains a stack of past MOT failures. It's a "San Remo" edition, whatever that means. It came with four extra doors and almost everything to put it back together I'll be honest, I have absolutely no idea what the hell I'm doing, all I know is that I want to weld the diff, lower it a lot, and make it go sideways in a comical manner. I also wouldn't think twice about an engine conversion, especially if I can't get the current engine going. ideas for this are welcome, but my favourite idea at the moment is to get a donor MX5 and use it for absolutely everything. Would make a lot of sense given the reliability, price and easily obtainable spares and upgrades. This is all I have for now, I'll get some of those cool pictures people take of rubbish cars to make them look really good using lots of shallow focus and closeups very soon. See you round chaps, this forum is going to be more of a home to me now than it has been in the past. gutted I missed RRG!

I mated the Lada gearbox upto a 2 litre Zetec, using a ford 1600 xflow clutch plate.
A couple of the bellhousing bolts lined up and I adapted the rest.
Never got it in the car, but it all seemed do-able.

How did you get the other bolts to line up/adapt the box to fit exactly?
I took the carb off tonight and being a '94 cat model it's got a fat load of EGR rubbish, solenoids and some strange hot water choke system slapped onto it. Does anyone know what would be a suitable more user friendly carburettor to fit? I'll weld up the manifold where the EGR goes and run without the solenoids and all that jazz.

Bought a 32-36 weber to plonk in, decided I can't be bothered with the stupid lada one, and I'll disconnect all the emissions rubbish and just get it tuned properly for an MOT.

Good old Haynes arrived yesterday, and today some new brake pads arrived. Some very retro "asbestos free" EBC pads "with Kevlar". Sort of hoping/assuming these are the 90's equivalent of greenstuff pads? maybe?

Also, got myself a small garage. this is a quarter of the unit, I have half of the whole building. not bad for £60 a month.... Next to a brewery.... YES.

Love a bit of history, one of the previous owners surfaced who owned the car between 2007 and 2008, supplying some pictures of the Lada in glorious daylight and with lovely shiny paintwork. Just two years before it was sorn'ed Fantastic!

The others lined up fairly well, it's difficult to explain without seeing it, but it's do-able.
How long the gearbox would last is anyone's guess though!

That looks just the ticket, so if it's that close toa zetec, a pinto would be the same or a nice screaming xflow , the bolts on the back of the block can be drilled and tapped there iirc?

If I were to go for a ford engine I would use a type 9 gearbox though, cheapish and certainly more reliable, and much easier to bolt up.

Well after a huge fuss with the seller not posting my carb, I found another one on eBay. freshly rebuilt, and the seller even jetted it to suit a 1.5, so for £100 I couldn't say no. its spotless. After a few substantial engine bay and carburettor fires and a lucozade bottle of petrol, we realised the distributor was on completely the wrong way, so after several hours of bangs and pops we got frustrated. BUT THEN. AT 3.10 AM.
There was a splutter. the timing was getting close. being a lada, it could well be 90 degrees out and almost be fine.
Then, FINALLY, at 3:20AM a thursday morning in a barn in rural Hampshire, with a pop and a bang from both ends, the old lump roared into life.
And now, it begins.

Got some interior back in, radiator half plumbed in, heater matrix blanked, throttle linkage roughly linked up, horn working, lights working and wiring in the engine bay tucked away neatly. making good progress! mmmmmm, instagram. also as you can see by the mess on the floor, all of the engine management and fuelling control stuff is now out. And since its got no ECU, it's not going to have a cat.
