I was considering not doing this but I reckon most of my classics will be sold (the Porker, and 205) shortly with a change of things. That is not to say that they need to go .
Anyway, the Stag. It is an original 3.0 V8 Automatic with a ZF Gearbox 4 Speed Auto Conversion. This gives you the best of both worlds IMO; the lazy leggy nature of a 4 Speed Overdrive car but with the pleasure of the 3 speed auto (with smoother changes to boot) for everywhere else (with the torque of the engine it is a lovely combination). This conversion is around £2.7k on its own. A couple of years ago I bought this car where it ran in a vague fashion and drove like that as well! Fine for some, but not for me! In that time I set to work on the car including doing the following:
Engine:
New Coolant pipes
New radiator
Monarch Holley Carb conversion
Stainless Steel Tubular manifolds
Alternator Relocation kit fitted to clear the manifolds
Recently serviced with new plugs, coolant, oil and drive belts.
Kenlowe Theromstatic fan.
Gearbox:
SuperFlex bushes on gearbox crossmember
Electronic speedometer
New and rebalanced Propshaft
Suspension and Chassis:
Chris Witor Lowering springs all round
Rays 6.5Jx15"Split rim wheels with 205/60R15 tyres
SuperFlex Bushes in places
New ARB Drop Links
New steering rack and column
New Track Rod Ends
Brakes:
New Wheel cylinders all round
New TRW Brake pads with fitting kit
Stainless Goodridge Brake Hoses
Refurbished master cylinder and replacement servo
Interior:
Retrimmed and refoamed seats
New(ish) carpets
NOS Wooden dash fitted
New Window switches with a working circuit breaker
Extras:
Electronic Indicator Relay conversion (can be easily reverted if you wish)
New Mohair Hood with seals, and fixings (anti catch straps etc.) with a reconditioned frame (it is a straight one which folds away).
Period number plates fitted (True riveted letters)
New seals all round (door, bonnet, windscreen)
Hardtop in reasonable condition supplied in the sale.
The bodywork overall is in very good condition I would say with the doors and tailgate being very straight (just as well seeing how pricey they are!) with the boot floor looking great as well. The interior is not too bad either with all of the attention! The engine pulls very well, and it sounds glorious!
It also comes with quite an array of spares including:
Before I bought it, the car seems to have had money thrown at it upon looking around including:
Replacement rear panel
Replacement A Panel lower repair panel
Replacement Sills
New Fuel pump
Refurbished Fuel tank
Are there problems? Yes. These include the following:
I may well wait until next year but if I am honest it would be good to see someone get more enjoyment out of this car than I am.
The price? £5250. With a working gearbox done from a rebuilder (I can pass these details on) it will make for quite a cheap and sound Stag with a working engine, reconditioned interior and a new roof (all of which are not cheap items or easy to fit (especially with the roof).

It also comes with quite an array of spares including:
- A working ZF Gearbox with torque converter
- New Silicon Coolant hose kit
- A good pair of driveshafts and wheel bearings
- Whine free diff with a strengthened nosecone and new bearing fitted up front
- Shotblasted rear trailing arms with SuperFlex bushes fitted (these will improve the car's handling in many ways and get keep the infamous Stag (or Triumph IRS) 'twitch' at bay. These have now come back.
- Spare Alternator
- Spare rear subframe
- Spare stock springs
- Other random bits (relay boards etc.).
Before I bought it, the car seems to have had money thrown at it upon looking around including:
Replacement rear panel
Replacement A Panel lower repair panel
Replacement Sills
New Fuel pump
Refurbished Fuel tank
Are there problems? Yes. These include the following:
- The Gearbox has become temperamental. Sometimes it works straight from the off with no issues. At other times it will not engage any gear until the engine has warmed up sufficiently. I cannot say I know for sure why it does this but the car will come with a replacement gearbox and installation instructions.
- -The nosecone bearing which resides in the nosecone that bolts onto the front of the diff has had its grease run out meaning that the car vibrates a little at 70MPH+. I have been planning to change the entire rear end (with the refurbished arms) but I have not had the time. Again, I have all of the spares to make the rear end better than the day it left the factory.
- The wheel arches have been changed (new wings etc.) in the past but they have not been finished on the inside lip as well as they could have been if I am honest. They have been fine over the 3 years I have owned the car
I may well wait until next year but if I am honest it would be good to see someone get more enjoyment out of this car than I am.
