Oi oi saveloy, Shacked up in northern France at the moment and I've found something distinctly Military and registered in 1963. So there I am trying to find out if it would be MOT exempt should I return to blighty with it, and the web is being none too forthcoming. I did have a list of what was MOT exempt a while back and I remember having trouble getting hold of it, so can anobody advise me as to whether it might or might not be? I'm sure vehicles originally intended/used for military purposes were/are exempt. I'm not going to reveal what it is, because A I don't have any pictures and B if I manage to get it (big if, for a start there are no brakes on it) I'll stick them up then. Cheers all

I'd not heard the 3.5 ton rule before. I know that some civilian trucks were MOT exempt. If its not got a current UK reg uyou may be stuffed as I think they closed the loop hole as many fairground trucks and the like were MOT exempted.

Isn't it something to do with a Showman's licence? Not sure if this is a myth or not but would recommend speaking to, or mailing, VOSA. Link be here... www.vosa.gov.uk/

Thanks guys, I knew this wouldn't be easy to pin down unless somebody had that list. A mate got it from a licensing office a few years ago, it's a proper V type form that they don't advertise. I then went and got myself one and I've never seen it listed anywhere else, but I can distinctly remember that the last category out of about 24 was 'playbus'... The plans we made. ;D

There are exemptions for recovery vehicles, but you probably have to have a recovery license. I reckon that any categories that are exempt will carry caviats or useage restrictions so you wont be any better off.

What military vehicles are exempt from M.O.T? Having been in Military Vehicle clubs for a couple of decades this question always pops up every 2 or 3 years and it has never fully been clarified. A lot of the attitude seems to be ‘don’t rock the boat’!? Nearly all CLASSIC military ‘TRUCKS’ ‘COMMERCIALS’ are exempt providing they are not used ‘for hire or reward’ …in other words not actually used as HGV’s! Military lorries/commercials like Diamond T and Scammells are exempt but also smaller lorries like the Bedford RL 3 toners & MK/MJ 4 toners and Simca SUMB’s However in recent times thanks to our wonderful vehicle registration authorities the word ‘TRUCK’ in relation to military vehicles has gone one stage further - The ever famous and classic Willys Jeep (including Ford GPW) is a brilliant example of this ‘truck’ designation :- British forces (under lease-lend) in WW2 classed them as ‘CAR 5cwt’ and US Forces classed them as ‘TRUCK ¼ ton’. When ‘demobbed’ and sold off into civilian use if they were ex-British army the description/log book would (usually) have ‘CAR’ somewhere in the title and if ex-US Army then the description/log book would (usually) have ‘TRUCK’ in it’s title. So (and I bet you’ve guessed what I am about to say!) if the word ‘Truck’ is in the title they appear to be M.O.T exempt but if ‘Car’ is in title M.O.T is required. Naturally this has caused a bit of “it’s not fair” debate among fellow Jeep owners but alas there you have it. As regards to actual Staff cars, military limousines and of course motorcycles these HAVE to be M.O.Ted. Finally although it may be exempt from M.O.T vehicle must be road worthy at all times and you can still be subject to spot checks etc. …so don’t abuse privilege, as if authorities do feel too many people are abusing situation they may impose new rules in a few years time …(which is something the ‘powers at be’ seem to really enjoy at present!)

Nice one guys, sorry it's not a Mehari... Prices in France are super-sky high for them, I saw one for 10K Euro in freshly restored condition. Meaning the parts are now attracting high prices too, the French seem to have woken up to 2cv's etc and pricing them, accordingly.
Thanks Twincam, it's similar in size to a Sumb and it's van derived so I'm guessing it should be a camion/truck of some kind. I appreciate the spot check and roadworthy thing, it's mega low K's and the only way it's getting back to the UK is under it's own power. So it'll be good.
I'd be looking to register and keep it for a couple of months, then sell before leaving the country again in August. It's just something I've always wanted and it's painfully close to where I am now...
I know, I must get pictures... ;D
