Car - 1999 audi 1.8 se 20v Miles 125k
Cambelt done in last 2k alongside oil and filter change.
When car is started every time there is a rattle from the top of the engine. It goes after approx 2 to 3 seconds and car is as normal thereafter.
Mechanic said it was oil pump and has changed that and cleaned the pick up pipe BUT it still makes the same noise each and every time it is started. Noise then goes after a few seconds and car is again normal thereafter.
I can only equate the noise to when I previously did an oil change on a 2.0l 8v vauxhall engine and it took time for the tappets to be lubricated or the hydraulic tappets to sort themselves out.
Now.... Mechanic reckons it is the timing chain tensioner however I'm not sure as if that was duff then would there not be a noise most of the time.
Not sure which oil is in engine or if it has had an engine flush at service.
Any help much appreciated
Cheers

Hi! Could you record the noise? This would be the easyest way to help. And do away with the crystall ball reading Though if you ask me, that sounds a lot like hydraulic lifters. Did your mech controll the oil pressure before he came to his conclusion?? Lifters can make noise due to insuficient oil pressure - but there are multiple causes for low oil pressure. And many times the lifters "leak" and need to be filled ntill they operate silent... Not saying your mechanic is an idiot, but maybe you should have someone else have a listen to the noise Get a 2nd opinion ;-) (you'd do the same if the doctor would tell you to amputate your head to cure a headache - if you get me )

Lol appreciate what your saying and its the father in laws not mine...... Second opinion later in the week....liking the hydraulic lifters how are they filled ? Oh and don't think for one minute he controlled the oil pressure think he just spoke to a mate at audi!
Still don't think oil pump needed doing...old boy was charged over 300 notes

Second opinion is in, after exploratoy surgery it is now confirmed to be the timing chain tensioner! Shame the first dude did the oil pump first as doubt that needed doing !

I've the exact same car and mine does it too. I've also a '98 Micra which does it too. On both it only lasts a few seconds on startup after lying unused overnight. I'm not too worried about it. Should I be???

Well according to the second mechanic....who i personally know and actually trust to know his stuff....as long as the rattle disapears after a few seconds it is no problem, but if it stays and rattles despite being a bit quieter then it ought to be done. The timing chain tensioner varies in price from £65 - £430 depending where you source one from !!!
