dashing around in the coupe yesterday lunch listening to the crackly version of radio 1 my stereo kicks out i heard the very sad news about the departure of john peel... they played teenage kicks by the undertones as it was his favourite song and it felt perfect... just the a-series buzzing away and the windows open... anyone else have fave driving music or driving moments that were helped with audio ? i know peelie was a car fan... anyone remember what he had ??

I'm not really a big one for ICE but I used to have a bit of kit in my Skodas...there's some songs that I hear now and think straight back to the interior of my S110R - acres of black vinyl and some quality Soul/Funk.
My Cressida has it's original with no FM, which doesn't usually make any difference anyway as I nearlyalways forget to put the aerial up, but on the way to RCS I listened to Virgin: Sunday morning, car behaving brilliantly, traffic free roads and U2 crackling from the radio - nice.

Know where your coming from on the Peely thing..... I was absolutely gutted when I heard the news. Another one of my idols gone....and I'll never get to meet.... felt the same when Joe Strummer died.... Back to the tunes thing.... My all time favourite track has gotta be "Ever fallen in love with someone you shouldn't have...." by the Buzzcocks. Cracking track and always makes me smile and think. For driving tunes, it's all dependent really on your mood, where your going, and what you're driving. Current CD's in my car are: Beastie Boys - Sounds of Science Beastie Boys - To the 5 boroughs Fat Boy Slim - Palookaville Goldie looking' Chain - Greatest Hits The Clash - The Clash David Bowie - Singles Collection Plus there's usually a couple of [glow=red,2,300]mystery[/glow] compilation CD's floating about! So quite a bit of diversity there!

BAD MUSIC: Bryan Adams Summer of '69. It just really grates for some reason. I remember back to the day I passed my driving test: Took some mates up to a pub about 5 miles away (just because I could! ). On the way back my mate put on a tape of the offending song on the cacky stereo in my Estelle. He refused to remove it, causing me some frustration, so ejected it and lobbed it out the window. He insisted on going back to fetch it, so finished up walking home! ;D ;D ;D (We're still mates tho'. ;D)

Very sad to hear about John Peel, the last of the interesting Radio 1 DJs.
In my car at the moment I have:
The best of Top of The Pops 1974 The Hoople by Mott the Hoople Old New Borrowed and Blue by Slade and Abbey Road by the Beatles all played on a Harry Moss 8 track
I cant hear any of them with the engine running unfortunatly

Ministrone, I salute you. taking into account the colour of your mini, and your ICE system I can only conclude that you are clearly as cool as a f****r.

Hahah I like me ICE.... in fact this summer it's getting an extensive overhaul.... But yeah, I like a wide variety of music to drive to. DJ Shadow, "The Private Press" has some excellent driving tracks on it, (see sig. for details ) Franz Ferdinand - self titles Lost Prophets - "Start Something" Incubus - "Make Yourself" and "S.C.I.E.N.C.E" Beastie Boys - "Ill Communication" and "Licensed to Ill" Probabyl one of the most enduring moments where I can remember listening to some music and driving, is hauling down the Desert Road in Central North Island (NZ) with the windows down, cracking hot weather, sunroof open, absolutely cranking the song "Summer Romance" by Incubus. Top stuff.... backed up by the crackling and popping that Alfa boxers do best on the overrun......

I don't know about a Passat, but JP had a succession of LHD Mercedes (a couple of W123s, and he was driving a blue 190 in the mid 1990s for sure) and there is a white '63 Chevy Impala sitting in a garage at Peel Acres...

Yeh, I was really gutted when I heard that John Peel had died - he was a real champion of all kinds alternative music both old and new - & a top bloke too. For me music - along with cars are part of the food of life... One audio/automotive moment stands out for me, last year me and my mate were packing away our camping gear after a rather debauched weekend on the Riviera Run (Mini version of RTTS) At Trevelgue in Newquay. The weather up to that point had been rather dull and cold, my mate then put his Li'l Duece Coupe album by the Beach Boys on the Stereo in his grey Anglia, at that moment the sun came out - it sounded cock-on with his little system, including a Bass tube in the boot ;D with the sun beating down on us, it really capped off a great weekend. Music in my car at the moment include; Eels - Lillies of the valleys (I think) Erland Oye (One half of the Kings of Convenience) The Ordinary Boys - Over the counter culture I saw the Ordinary Boys live at a local venue a couple of weeks ago - they truely rock I'm 'feeling' the Incubus albums Snoozingeuro - especially 'Make yourself'

THANKS GUYS...i posted this thread thinking that i might be frowned on as its not truly car related...
i think music can really define a moment anyway but if thats tied in with a good ride* too then thats when things get interesting . . .
dig out 'teenage kicks' & blast it out for peelie !
*ride meaning car journey (in this thread anyway) ;D

I've always been one of those people that loves their ICE, but it's gotta be done in a subtle way in a retro motor. This week in the car's (when they work! ) I have been mostly listening to; Jimi Hendrix Stone Temple Pilots Soulwax Mark B and Blade Ministrone - I know where you're coming from about not being able to hear stuff over the engine though. RIP JP

typical of me i refuse to buy a car stereo so i always nick them from the scrappy AND i won't have a CD player or record tapes, i depend on what i find in scrap motors, i've got everything from Black Flag to Sinatra to Abba to Nirvana. i just fumble about and bang on whatever i find at the time. the missus doesn't approve ;D

RIP John. he got friends of mine "miss black america" noticed which later let to a record deal and got them famous (nearly) but go get the album. he got me into a lot of music and I'm very gratful for that.
i think the music in the cars changes with the car. for the dolly it would have to be the 70's and 80's stuff like the who, rolling stones etc but in the manta it was rock and lots of it. i think the best was twisted sisters i wanna rock and you aint seem nothing yet by batchman

Depends how you're driving too. When I'm just driving and not in a hurry something like Franz Ferdinand is alright, but get me on an empty backroad and in goes Generation Terrorists and down goes the throttle pedal! ;D ;D ;D
