My ride is looking rather in between at the moment. I can't afford a complete re-spray at the time beeing, and I love the "Rat-look" right now the car is, as I said, looking kinda in between. But how do I get the best "rat-look" result? I'm thinking Matt-black, red and white pinstriping, red rims, crome hub-cabs, and white-walls on the tyres. Shiny crome bumpers, and around the lights etc... Been looking at looks like these: I know the cars are all VW's but it's that look I'm going for... I don't want to much rust on it though, since I live in Denmark. A worn-out paint look. My question is, how do I best get the paint-job to look old? I'm thinking of sanding the black paint down to the original white in some places, but I'm not sure excatly how it's done best! Please help me. I'm open for other ideas too. Please see the car under "Readers Rides", just click below my signature.

If you are going for a rat look, i wouldnt paint the car matt black, stick with the current colour, a fresh coat of paint is the last thing you need, it'll look too deliberate i think.

Aye, what you are describing is more "traditonal hot rod" than rat.
LMAO @ Mr Sommerset's suggestion, but its not far off. A lot of fake patina cars have been tactically rubbed down with sand paper to break though and create the "wear and tear".

Paint the doors and roof light blue, or green and paint some company logos/slogan on the side - I'd suggest something like: AMBULANCE Mental Health Dept. 021-555-6976 Then attack the whole lot with sandpaper so that lots of the paint (the lettering and the new colour) gets rubbed back to the original paint underneath.

I'd suggest that diy 'manufactured rat' is almost always doomed to failure. 'Genuine rat' with proper old paint and rust like the Linde bus is cool however.

You don't need to make it any more rat. Get an arial bolted onto the wing and a '76' arial topper and it'll be sweet. Or you could sand all the rust bacck, treat it and primer it, the patches of primer would look cool.

Fake patina ALWAYS looks fake. Especially when you resort to painted rust, or rubbing through perfectly good paint with sandpaper - it's so hard to get it in the right places, the places it would happen naturally, it'll look manufacturered.
Better bet is to use and enjoy it as it is, and create your own 'look'.

It's excatly what I'm afraid of, that it'll look too fake/manufactoret.
The front has been slammed, I only need the rear-end now.
Unfortunently we have some pretty fukced up lawes in Denmark, regarding changing ANYTHING on your car. 40mm lowering is max, mine is lowered 60mm in the front though, and being lowered 45mm in the rear.
To the guy who suggested the 76-ball on the antenna: Where do I get this?

I'm afraid 'engineering' in the whole rat factor takes away the coolness in my eyes. Just leave the paint as is, if it's weathered already.

i think your one of those lucky people who's cars will look cool no matter what u do to it (within reason, body kits would be a no no) so id just go round the car repair as much of the rust as possible and just touch it up with rattle cans. this iwill give it a patchy appearence but wont be intentional so the patches will be dictatored by where the rust is, thus giving it a natural worn look. and of course slamm it all the way round
