Tis true.... common cars often have rarer manuals. Almost had to pay shop price for a Mk2 Astra one (secondhand mind, loads on ebay for £10+postage) until I found one in the Ford section that obviously didn't make it above a 49p starting bid  VW Type 1 and Type 3 manuals are always about the same price too, even though there were a few hundred thousand T3s built, and about twelve zillion T1s so you'd think there were far more Haynes books around. |

Older ones are 100% better for that, they often get an entire gearbox or axle on one page with all the detail. Later ones split it up too much, seems to be partly more complex assemblies and partly just laziness, there doesn't seem to be as much skill in the diagrams. Remember those t-shirts that have Beetle / Capri / Mini / Camper cutaway drawings on them, taken from the Haynes cover? Someone went a step further, and I managed to find a t-shirt with a fusebox diagram from a beetle printed on the side. Not only does it look kinda cool, but if I were to ever break down wearing it in a beetle due to a fusebox-related electrical fault, I'd be quids in! |

I saw a set of Haynes covers reduced and reprinted onto coasters, looked like a pukka Haynes product. The pack was optimistically titled Classics Cars, contained small hatches like Metro, Panda, Nova and Fiesta IIRC. Yeah, I've seen them. They also do cups and other things. There's a shop in Scarborough called Retro 36 selling them, I've looked on the site and can't find them but they're definately in the shop. |

Older ones are 100% better for that, they often get an entire gearbox or axle on one page with all the detail. My old (paperback) A35 one is quite cool. I think the first one he did was for the Spridget (possibly just Sprite?) and so the A35 was a logical next step. There's a photo of two blokes (one of them presumably Mr Haynes) holding an A series engine in the first section with the caption "Although the engine is fairly heavy it is not difficult to carry short distances. In this case it was carried up four flights of steps to the authors workshop" I like the "wallpapering/sound proofing" garage idea with old manuals  |
