Right, as promised some up to date pics!!
It's a 1982 Y reg Polo Classic Formel E, meaning it had the square headlight Derby front end from factory, as well as the formel E boot spoiler, MPG gauge, passenger window delete and overdrive gearbox. It started life as a high comp 1.1l engine that was pretty nippy to be fair, but started knocking not long after I got the car.
Naturally, the sensible thing to do in this case is build a 1.6l 16v engine and put it on bike carbs. The engine consists of an AFH (6n polo 1.4 16v) block head and pistons with a polo 6N2 GTi crank and rods, giving a bump in compression to roughly 12:1, and runs on Kawasaki ZX9R bike carbs. The engine was rebuild as a matter of course, with new shells, rings and gaskets, a new water pump. The head was also stripped down and cleaned, the intake ports matched to the bike carb manifold and the valves reground. The flywheel/starter are from a mk2 golf/polo 1.3, as the fly is much lighter than the AFH one, and a new G40/AFH clutch was installed at the same time. A new radiator was installed not long after as the original was clogged and just generally manky, the new one is from a caddy 1.9TDI and keeps the top fill end cap. This rad is massive and is probably overkill tbh, but i was paranoid about boiling my new engine at the time lol!
The engine work was carried out in june 2012 and since then i've probably done about 8-10000 miles in it, including a holiday to france and one to cornwall, and the engine has been faultless, save for the dizzy sensor starting to break down which has since been replaced. The 4 speed gearbox was retained with a view to swap it for a 5 speed in the future but honestly i've never felt the need to, the OD 4th is fine for cruising and nets about 40mpg. I've unfortunately never dyno'd the car but would guess it outputs about 130hp and a good lump of torque (maybe around 140ft/lbs?).
Last year it had:
2" stainless exhaust
4-2-1 stainless manifold
rear wheel bearings
rear drums refurbed (new cylinder and shoes etc)
hand brake cable
rear brake lines
This summer I've been tidying up the worst bits on the car ready for sale, so far its had GT bumpers (red stripe), bump strips and gutter trims removed (the strips are included in the sale, trims were knackered). I've resprayed the worst bits of bodywork, mainly a couple of bits on the front valance and the rear of the boot lid. I've also bought it a new Bosch S4 battery and a kawasaki fuel pump to neaten up the engine bay.
Unfortunately there are a few bad bits on the car:
-Rear jacking points are rusted through, but this is not an MOT fail and fairly easy to fix.
-There is a faint scrape in the near side rear quarter, hard to notice but its there. While its been parked a second scrape has appeared in the arch which cracked the paint. I started rubbing this down but the weather prevented any paint getting put down. If I get a chance before the sale I will try and get this done but don't count on it!
-Both sills have a couple of scabs that have been treated by the previous owner. Both are structurally sound, and the scabs have not got worse in the 2.5 years I have had the car just abit of an eye sore. I have included close ups of both sills.
-A good polish has brought the mismatched paintwork up to scratch (see pics) but the front wings and rear of the bootlid remain the worst areas.
-The front seats are abit tatty and don't quite match the GT door cards.
-I have no idea of the milage. The original ODO has never worked while I have owned it but shows 90 odd thousand. At a guess i would say around 115000 miles, but the engine has done no more than 11000, neither have the wheel bearings for that matter!
The car also comes with a bunch of spares including the original black vinyl door cards, a mk1 golf GTi steering wheel, a passengers wing mirror and the original drivers mirror as well as a bunch of interior parts. The original front bumper is also included, but the original rear was both rusty and bent so it went in the bin!
Overall this is a brilliant old retro runabout with a cracking little engine that will put a smile on your face whenever you drive it. Although there are a few bits that need doing, the shell is solid and the paintwork polishes up brillianlty. A set of 8j alley cats or ATS classics would really set it off, or leave it as it is for the sleeper look and have fun embarrassing all kinds of newer machinery . Although i'd love to keep it, a new job in dagenham means I will have nowhere to put it, and a slightly more civilised car would be nice for the daily commute.
Price wise i'm after £1750 but am open to sensible offers or swaps. The car will be sold with 12 months MOT but no tax and is located in the shropshire hills, SY5 postcode. Message me on here or drop me a text on 07816444172.
