So I have priced a recon 1275 gearbox up from a place at Nuneaton and it comes out about £460 service exchange, this will be a job for the winter I reckon so I am going to chance the 80 mile drive to RRG16 with the car as it is. Have you tried contacting John at Guessworks? He did a re-furb rather than a re-con on the Midas gearbox for about £260 including pick-up and delivery. He does Mini stuff mainly, but it's basically the same box. www.guess-works.com/

Great to see this old bird made it to the gathering, albeit in a poorly way! Sounds like your adventures kept you entertained though. As for electronic ignition, even my 1967 Lambretta has an electronic setup; it definitely gives decent peace of mind for overall reliability. Good luck with the next steps!

You don't have to fit electronic ignition, you just need to find someone selling decent condensers. I'm yet to have a problem with any points I've bought but condensers are another story. I'm told you can fit a capacitor in place of the condenser which does the same job, it's something I'll be doing with the Princess in the near future, and that should cost in the region of £2 and provide decent reliability. I've not done it yet but I'll be sure to post results when I do attempt it later this year. For the overheating, check the state of the thermostat as well as getting the radiator cleaned out properly. It's been stood a long time so the antifreeze that was in there could have started to do weird things and gum up the internals. If you're really unlucky it's will have jammed up the waterpump. All the parts are easy to get at least, one big benefit of the A. I put off using electronic ignition in mine for years because I didn't want cheap 3rd party Chinese electronics letting me down in a car with otherwise reliable electrics. But it has now got to the point where you won't find a good enough quality replacement condenser. Even the Distributor Doctor one I tried was intermittent, so I had no choice but to go electronic. Even that thing only lasted about 1500 miles before it packed up and I'm on my second one.

Perhaps find a secondhand electronic set up, my Elan has a Lumentation set up that looked old when I bought the car 23 years ago, still works fine and has never missed a beat. Of course in those days this would have been made in the UK with U.S. or Japanese sourced electronic components.

Anyone got any experience with these? Also had a price off John at Guessworks in Rugby for the gearbox of £149+ parts so that's the winter project sorted! Thanks for the info mrbounce.

I've got one for an earlier a series, not the best quality. When I had it setup at Slarks, the advance was massive and needed reworking, and the trigger had also split. Luckily they've removed a few in the past and had a spare.

Mine is the same one for the 25D. A lot of people haven't had any trouble with them so I may have either got a duff one or I just do more miles than the average weekend driver. They replaced my dead one with no quibbles. I think he is BBSimon on eBay.
Look for a NOS distributor cap if you can. Their leads are fine and the red rotor arms are good, but they put zinc or nickel plated terminals inside the distributor cap. If the car sits for a bit they crust up with white oxide and it won't start. Old caps have brass terminals which don't do it.
Edit, just noticed that's for the whole distributor. Probably don't need to replace the whole thing - it won't be that worn. Just do the electronic ignition, leads, rotor arm and cap if it needs it.

So now Christmas is out the way it's time to dig this out and hopefully get stuck in! Unfortunately over the last month all the electrics have disappeared with the exception of the heater and the side lights! So no horn, hazards, indicators, main beam and crucially no fan which saw the temperature soaring after ten minutes of running. This all seems a bit weird because they all run off different fuses on the fuse box. Lucas electrics at there finest. 😆😩

I replaced the fuses last summer but I reckon it may be sloppy connections on them in the fuse box as some of them seem a bit loose, next job is to take all the fuses out and pinch the connections to try and get a better contact.

Update time and it's not great news. For more than a couple of reasons the Allegrat and I have parted company, family reasons and work commitments have made me come to the painful decision to move it on. It's just not going to get the attention it needs any time soon. But.............

Not wanting to give up on life with an Allegro all together and needing something a little more practical I am now the proud owner of this little beauty...meet Herpie.. It's a 1982 Mk3 with a confused identity, it's got a sweet 1500 twin carb E series engine and I've known the last three owners. This is me driving it at RRG13. This is what it looked like back in 2012 when it lived around 6 miles away from me in Ashby-de-la-Zouch. And here it is next to the Allegrat at last year's gathering. Not really what I had in mind but I know the Allegrat has gone to a good home.
