I've put a deposit down on an h reg 200sx to rob the engine and box and other stuff for my escort. The guy selling it was going to build a drift car but he blew the turbo up and has now lost enthusiasm with it. He says that with the hybrid turbo that was on it he was getting 250 bhp. I always take this kind of talk with a pinch of salt anyway but does that sound feasible for an engine bored out to 2 litre with a hybrid turbo, chipped ecu and no other mods? I'm guessing the standard output of one of these must be somewhere around the 150 to 180 mark right?
Also, what should be looking out for on this engine. It sounds sweet enough, we left it running for about half an hour and it didnt develop any knocks, didnt overheat, no smoke or crankcase compression. It did have a very slight top end noise on idle but i'm prepared to live with that. Also, how cheap are bits, service parts, gasket sets ect. I had a crx a few years back and bits for that were mega money, thats pretty much my only experience with J engines and i'm a bit wary of pklaying silly buggers with crazy boost if its going to mean selling my family every time it need a rebuild.
Thanking you in advance ;D

The 200SX (depending on variant) can have up to 203BHP as standard, with a better turbo, filter, exhaust & chip I don't see why not - much easier to extract gains from a turbo engine (consequently easier to blow them apart )

Uk Classic Imprezas have 220bhp, WRX imports 260bhp and the WRX STi's have 280bhp as standard. With a bigger turbo and a few mods the latter 2 can see 300+ quite easily and they are a 2 litre so 250 isn't out of the way at all.

That engine should be a CA18DET with 175hp-ish. They're an advanced engine for their time and incredibly easy to get good power gains from! A wealth of tuning stuff available too. However, do take care to change the oil often and with decent stuff as otherwise they suffer from blown headgaskets.
Bored out to 2 litres and with a fancy turbo, 250hp doesn't sound too unfeasible but I reckon more like 220hp. You'll probably want to look into how he blew the turbo up, could be fuelling issues or something.

Thats gonna be a right giggle in a mk 1 escort then ;D ;D Think I need to start looking for a 240 rear axle. Kirbys have a couple of estates in from memory My Housemate in Warwick (He of very very silly Skyline fame) had a 200sx with 375hp and no internal mods ;D admittedly that was an sr20det rather than the ca18 but even so it was a proper tool 176mph on the gps datalogger from that one ;D

Ah, I just assumed it'd be an SR20DET and not 'just' the CA18

I have recently been working on an S14 - SR20DET. Lovely engine but everything around it is built by Japanese people with tiny body parts. I detested working on it. Access to everything is a nightmare. Good that you're using the bits for an Escort. I guess H reg means you have a 1.8 engine. They're a bit weak but as long as yours is low mileage and well serviced then everything should be cool. www.sxoc.com is great. The people on the forum really know their stuff. One thing about the S13s to be wary of is that they have all been owned by potential drifters and wideboys. So beware. Your turbo problem will almost certainly be gaskets, hoses and ancillary problems. Shouldn't be too expensive but will be time consuming if you fix it before you remove the engine because of access. Your SX is this model I assume: The Nissan manual for the S14 is available as a massive download from the SXOC site and it is a godsend. I guess that the S13 manual is also available so go find it and go through the turbo section. Charlie

The turbo problem is the bearings are knackered. I've been having a nose round the sxoc site (cheers hairnet ) and i've found out they have a problem with the standard oil feed pipe not supplying enough oil for a bigger turbo, so i guess i know the first thing i need to buy. Its got a standard turbo on it at the moment but the other one will come with the car so i might have a go at rebuilding it. I'm a bit puzzled as to why the 1.8 would be bored out to 2 litre when you can get a 2 litre from a later car. I wonder if the guy might have got his wires crossed on this a little. I'll probably give a strip down and check over before it goes in anyway, just to be on the safe side. Thanks for all your help dudes, and if anyone wants an S13 shell or some fast and furious style bolt on tat watch this space ;D

great little engine they have a rep for weak big ends when tuned but that is the only real prob.. it seams they need to keep revs lower than std rev limiter and they last.. plenty of people getting big hp from them and a few getting 400 odd hp from std internals!!!! std they produce 175hp but apparently the recipe for a realistic 230 to 250 hp is to run a decent chip in the ecu with no cat a decent exhaust. decent air filter, a big front mount intercooler. and the boost (std turbo t25) turned up to 15psi and thats it!! any more will need a mappable ecu chip usually a fith injector a hybrid t25/28 or a sr20 t28 turbo pref' a ball bearing type for less lag.. a decent fuel pump, exhaust manifold, and a bigger afm from a 350z or something? and over 300 is achiveable.... this is all coming from what I have read on the net/ and from people ive spoke to personally that have experience with these ca18det engines.. and I have no reson to doubt it, but but I HAVE NOT had done this myself as yet so don't take it as gospel as there are a lot of "internet experts" that will give lots of advice with no experience..... lol rather like me ^^^^ lol si ps a piccy of my bruvs little project with one in....

Went to a recent rolling road day recently, at AP motors in Plymouth. There was an S13 200SX ca18det, standard internals, larger T28 turbo (running 17 psi), walbro fuel fuel, exhaust and air filter. Did over 250 bhp impressive from a mildly tuned 1.8 engine!

A friend in work has one of these, he has heard that the bottom ends of the engines are a weak link, but that might just be older engines. I don't know a great deal about them myself so I might well be talking guff!
