EXTERIOR
The stunning top of the range for luxury Mk3 Escort Ghia is finish in Ford Lacquer Red (code L5). The stunning paintwork boasts a deep rich and uniform finish. This incredibly well preserved example is structurally excellent and all panels are wonderfully straight with even gaps, and no rust or corrosion is present. A tiny ding to the lower front valance is barely worthy of mention and paintwork rectification certainly does not detract from the cars remarkable preserved state. The extensive and factory original brightwork to the windows, belt line and lights is remarkably well conserved. All glass including the sunroof is the original number plate etched factory items and even an original period roof rack remains with the car! A once common sight, now representing a slice of Ford Europe motoring history.
INTERIOR
Finished in the plush ‘Ghia’ spec Grey Fabric (code QR), the pristine seats and condition of the materials is fully commensurate with such a low mileage and cherished example. The matching door cards with wood inserts are spotless and the colour keyed cut pile carpets have defied the years remarkably. All switchgear is functional and intact, and the original dashboard top has only minimal hairline cracking. The original trimmed parcel shelf is intact, straight and complete with the rubber hangers. Even the factory Ford push button FM radio and cassette holders remain fitted! An unused cigar lighter offers an insight to the pampered nature of this interior, firmly upholding the cars wonderfully cherished overall state. Very 1980’s!
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The time proven transverse mounted 1600 OHC engine with single variable-venturi carburettor develops 79bhp, achieving a top speed of 104mph and 0-60 in 11.7 seconds. The engine is wonderfully quiet and smooth, owing in no doubt to a lifetime of documented fastidious care and maintenance. The standard specification automatic choke and electronic ignition are both present and correct, and operate perfectly. The five speed synchromesh gearbox with remote shift is light and exact, a joy to use.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The 5” x 13” pressed steel wheels with the original pristine full face wheel trims are shod in matching 155/80 R13 tyres with masses of tread remaining. The original unrestored spare wheel is housed in the spotless boot area which still displays the original factory build stickers. The diagonally split hydraulic circuit servo assisted brakes with ventilated 9.4” front discs and rear drums bring the car up to a steady, straight and assured halt.
HISTORY FILE
Supplied by Ford Main Dealers Currie Motors Molesey and registered new on 6th February 1985 to first owner Miss C Chaplin, the car remarkably remained in her care for 21 years! A new car sales invoice illustrates a purchase price of £7,527.63 including the Ford Extra Cover warranty at £101.20. A lifetime of incredible care and fastidious maintenance is illustrated in the original Ford Service Plan booklet displaying no less than 28 stamps to fully document the amazingly low 36,551 miles covered, along with every MOT certificate carried out. A further collection of invoices as well as two sets of keys complete the history file.
