So this is the first time I've ever been part of a project this size, and to be honest I'm not sure the car is even salvageable. This car belonged to my mate's Grandad and was bought brand new in 1955, it was his pride and joy and he did whatever work he could to maintain it until around 10 years ago when his health got worse. He passed away 4 years ago and the car was left out in the open until it was moved to a small garage where it sat for two years and became the home of a homeless bloke. After two years of "wouldn't it be good if we got this running" talks in the pub, its finally been shifted to his garage and we can start work. The plan is to do as much work ourselves to keep costs down and then send it off for the various work needed for completion. Once completed it will become a wedding car and can start bringing back some of the money that will be spent on it. So here it is I'm only using an Iphone 4S and there are no lights in the garage so the photos won't be the best. ![](http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag209/Jamesrw87/IMG_1414_zpsb8c72dda.jpg) So as you would expect one word comes to mind with this car RUST and lots of it. ![](http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag209/Jamesrw87/IMG_1415_zpse8d296c0.jpg) ![](http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag209/Jamesrw87/IMG_1419_zpsd8603fc5.jpg) Don't think we can save the sunroof ![](http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag209/Jamesrw87/IMG_1421_zps48bee5ba.jpg) Rusty rear arches ![](http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag209/Jamesrw87/IMG_1428_zps22a6cb25.jpg) After spending an hour or two checking out the car and some of the parts in the boot we decided the first step would be to get as much chrome off as we could. ![](http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag209/Jamesrw87/IMG_1429_zpscd64a1e1.jpg) ![](http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag209/Jamesrw87/IMG_1430_zps7dcd1120.jpg) You've got to love the choice of gloves ![](http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag209/Jamesrw87/IMG_1433_zps95dbcd5a.jpg) The wonderful 3.4 straight six minus air filter s1369.photobucket.com/user/Jamesrw87/media/IMG_1434_zpsdb025d76.jpg.html?sort=3&o=14So day two of the resto was dedicated to getting the seats, carpet and soundproofing out to have a look at the floor. ![](http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag209/Jamesrw87/Photo09-08-2014152232_zpsf16852a6.jpg) ![](http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag209/Jamesrw87/IMG_1439_zps4f1f6edc.jpg) ![](http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag209/Jamesrw87/IMG_1440_zpsadd1ded5.jpg) more to follow

Beautiful...! I reckon that cleaning and buffing a lot of what you HAVE got will save you a fair few pounds in the long run... I think ensuring this one looks its age (patinated chrome, creased but clean leather etc...) will be the best thing to do whilst sorting the rusty parts out and giving it a good quality spray! Obviously these words really don't do justice to what probably does need doing but I hope you get the general idea...?! Anyhow, good luck this looks like a superb project to get stuck into...

Agreed. don't make it look too new. Looking patina'd but with nice paint will work well in a wedding car, originality appeals

Thanks guys I agree this car has to make a return to the road!
It has one of the worse driving positions I've ever seen, the lovely big steering wheel comes down to about 2 inches off the front seat and so you have to push your knees out and then bring your feet back in. The rear view mirror is mounted lower than the tops of the rear seats, the wing mirrors are almost impossible to see out of. All of which spur me on to make it a driving experience I have to have.
If it was down to me we would be going down the route you guys are suggesting, I want it to have fresh paint job so from a distance it looks fully restored but as you come in closer you can see that the majority of it is still original. Inside the wood and seats just need a freshen up and the carpet and headlining will need to be replaced.
Progress on the car will really depend on how much time and money my friend's family want to put into it.

Yes, but you forgive the ergonomics with the consideration of style!
(Actually, same could be said for economics)

Contrary to popular opinion, I do have mechanical sympathy, I always feel sorry for the cars I drive.

Lordy I hope you have deep pockets - a Real worthy project prepare yourself for a vertical learning curve will be hard but she is worth it Well done for pulling her out and saving her Ok, i am going to half agree. You will need very very deep pockets - you might want to do a rough budget and triple it. Other than the family and friendship connection, there are much better projects out there. Unless you are really skilled and have the money, I would run from this one as it is only going to spend your money and break your heart.

As we all know money comes and goes, If the end product is restored Jag back on the road, i'm sure my friend's family will feel that whatever they put into it will be worth it. I'm just happy to be working on such lovely old car at the moment.

I'm ashamed to say I've not even seen the car since August, as it's my mates car its really down to when we are both free for any progress to be made. His rugby season has started up again and that rules out saturdays, while I've been spending my time karting and working on my own car.
If the car was in my garage I would have spent most evenings doing at least an hour or so of rubbing down or anything I could to save on the cost of labour for any future trips it has to specialist garages.
To be honest guys I think he has lost interest in it, such a shame. I really wanted to get stuck into this one, would have been a huge job and I would have learnt a lot on the way. Anyway I've got a some BMW's to play around with in the meantime.

iv'e done a fair bit on a Magnesium bodied Mk7 and it is such good fun to drive and amazingly quick for such a huge car. in fact it has to be my favorite car iv'e worked on. (thats from someone who gets to play with GT40's, Cobras, racing E Types etc) but the standard ones are like driving a bus. need to turn the steering way before the corner as it takes a while for the wheels to catch up. it's one hell of a restoration to take on. ![](http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t27/B0ZWELL/42_zpsc53d89c8.jpg) chassis number 6. started life as William Lyons personel car before it was taken by the race department and rebodied. now has a 3.8 with triple Webers.

What a beautiful example, that is just stunning. Mr Jaguar would be a proud man if he were to see that still looking so good. Sounds to me like you have a dream job, can I come and work for you? I was always looking forward to having that driving experience but its looking more and more likely that day will never come. Such a shame, I've never seen one on the road and its a car that needs to be out for people to see. If we do start this restoration again would be okay if I came to you for tips and general trouble shooting? would be great appreciated!

What's going to happen to it now? To be honest, it didn't/doesn't look too bad. Nothing much, its just sitting in my mates' garage and the seats are in his shed. I'm going to try my best to get him back into the project, beacuse I want to get it back on the road
