My Mahindra is reluctant to start (been standing 9 years) despite good compression, new battery, recon starter, new glow plugs so I decided to drain the fuel tank just in case it was water contaminated. I was a little shocked to find a previous owner had filled it up with red diesel ! I live in an rural area and have been stopped several times in the past by VOSA to have fuel checked so want to ensure no problems if I get stopped again in the future. I believe red diesel leaves traces so it's detectable even if you then fill up with white duty paid diesel. So whilst I can drain the tank what should I do to fully cleanse the fuel system ?
Thanks.

Other than doing a full drain and refill there's nothing you can do to really bleach the staining out of the hoses. I wouldn't worry about the red dye leeching back into the fuel enough to cause you issues though, after all if the car was used off the road it's perfectly OK to fill it with cherry. VOSA would really have to prove there was a very reasonable concentration of the stuff in there to make an issue of it.

apparently they can tell how long ago it was last run on it now- i don't know if the colour fades out or what? so once youve had a few clear tanks through it, youll be fine.

Tank need to be removed anyway to repair rear floor so I'll steam it clean and fuel lines will be changed anyway (old / cracked pipes). After been stopped /interrogated by VOSA about what fuel I was using a few times am a bit paranoid.

Paul , if you google your question it appers quite common on 4x4 forums . From a quick look i gather they can pick up 1 part in 20 of fuel so it needs to be thorough . Its suggested a few tanks through with filter changes , and maybe bio is better as its mstronger in some way . Also keep documentation of when you owned it , how long its been off the road , anything to explain it .
