So last Saturday morning when I went to go to work I found someone had backed out of the pub car park across the street from us and put a nice dent in the door of our car. Of course, fine upstanding citizens that they were, they didn't leave a note, and some nice dark red paint quite high up on the door.
I didn't report it to my insurers because I had no evidence of who was at fault and it seems pointless to make a claim against my insurance when I can replace the door with a used one in the same colour easily enough.
However I kept an eye on the pub car park all week and last night sure enough there was a Land Rover Freelander in dark red with scratches on the corner of the rear bumper that matched the height of the paint marks on my car.
So,the question is - if I report this to my insurance company how likely are they to pursue the other driver? Or is it the case that without a witness or an admission on the part of the person who did it, they won't run with it.

At least it would have been logged, the Police would have considered it to be a criminal offence and not just a civil matter and you could have informed your insurance company and advised them to hang fire until the perpetrator had been caught or you would do the work yourself. A week later, you are going to be asked the obvious question of why didn't you report it straight away and you may be seen to be a bit opportunistic. You are best off doing the repair yourself and hoping that somebody might be nasty enough to sneak over to the Freelander and slash the tyres if not put a small screwdriver through the sidewalls rendering them scrap..... Not that id condone it.

Yeah, I probably should have reported it to the police and insurance at the time but then I didn't think I was going to have much luck identifying the car that did it.

Does the pub have any CCTV?

Unless you have footage of them doing it, or independent witness, anything else is purely circumstantial and won't stand up.
Probably better off now to just bite the bullet

polite word with the driver saying the pub cctv/next door neighbor etc caught a freelander hitting your car last week, see if theyl settle to some kind of arrangement as a pose to reporting them for leaving the scene of an accident.
reality that you don't have footage doesn't matter if it curse word them up enough to make them pay up. assuming it was them that is!
